As a Republican, I wouldn't put it past some people on my side from jumping on this, as well.
The real point is that if society has reached a point that we're legislating common courtesy, we're in a lot more trouble than I thought.

like there is nothing going on in the country more important than this. the economy is horrible, gas is almost $4.00/gal (maybe higher in some areas, about $3.50 in fla) these these m+tha f+chas want to make calling in planes illigal... pretty soon gas is gonna make it to expenseive to fly, and maybe they will make planes illigal lol

It's really just one of those uncontroversial issues that politicians like to jump on. Almost no one likes the idea of a person next to them spending an entire flight on the phone. There's probably little chance that such a bill would ever make it to a vote, but it gets their names in the news.

Politicians are the ones flying a lot, so it's a matter of personal benefit to them. Everyday people don't fly *that* much, and given the rising cost of jet fuel and airline consolidation, everyday people won't be able to afford to fly much.
