Politicians Look to Criminalize In-Flight Calling
Apr 16, 2008, 2:24 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Today two politicians proposed a bill, the HANG UP Act, that would make it illegal to engage in voice calls while in an airplane that's in the air. Rep. Peter DeFazio and Rep. Jerry Costello, both Democrats, argued that the American public despises the idea of in-flight calling. Their bill, however, would allow passengers the ability to use cell phones for Internet and messaging use. Talking on cell phones on an airplane is currently limited to when the plane is at the gate or taxiing after landing. The FCC has already put the idea of in-flight calling on indefinite hold. The HANG UP Act proposes to make it permanently illegal.

I mean, I can seriously think of better things for Congress to litigate upon. The current salary ( 2008 ) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $169,300.00 per year. Not to mention officers earn ...

If In-Flight Calling is Outlawed, Only outlaws will have in-flight calling...
They're kidding, right?
In the telecommunications space, most people think the US is a third world country.
You can get better phones and service in India and China than you can in the US, and the EU has already approved cell phone use in-flight (using an on-board micro tower and satellite uplink).
I think it's more annoying to be walking down the street and have someone yelling into their cell phone, or to have the checkout line stalled because some person wants to finish their conversation as opposed to interacting with the cashier. How about we make those illegal too!
Oh, and I didn't hear anyone complaining when satellite phone service was available on almost every US carrier.
The only ban ...

Seriously, this is a pointless bill, most likely issued to get themselves into the headlines. Honestly, things we despise? I can think of a LOT more useful things to ban, such as l...

The only ban I support is holding a cell phone and talking while driving. I have been run off the road a few times by people in trucks and SUVs talking animatedly on their cell phone, completely clueless of their s

Do we really need this?
If this bill passes, on every flight I'm on, I'm going to have an obnoxiously loud one-way conversation to nobody in particular, but not be on my cell phone. Sure, it'll be annoying and obnoxious as hell, but not illegal!
I don't get you guys!
Do you guys really want to be stuck next to someone leading a conference call for 5 1/2 hours from JFK to LAX?
Have you ever sat next to some people (or worse between two people) who were having an animated conversation on a cross country flight? What is the diffe...

Out of all the posts on this topic, not one of them opposes this bill because they don't like the concept of it.

Maybe criminalization is a bit much, but some sorta fine would be well in order.
