Politicians Look to Criminalize In-Flight Calling

Article Comments  40

Today two politicians proposed a bill, the HANG UP Act, that would make it illegal to engage in voice calls while in an airplane that's in the air. Rep. Peter DeFazio and Rep. Jerry Costello, both Democrats, argued that the American public despises the idea of in-flight calling. Their bill, however, would allow passengers the ability to use cell phones for Internet and messaging use. Talking on cell phones on an airplane is currently limited to when the plane is at the gate or taxiing after landing. The FCC has already put the idea of in-flight calling on indefinite hold. The HANG UP Act proposes to make it permanently illegal.

Trolling for free publicity and votes. Two moron politicians a card or two short of a full deck, but then again do you know a politician that isn't?
completely agree. Have you nothing better to do as a politician than to fight people making a stupid call during a flight. WHO CARES!!!!!

Three Cheers to Mike Dano...

I second the motion.

//RANT
I mean, I can seriously think of better things for Congress to litigate upon. The current salary ( 2008 ) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $169,300.00 per year. Not to mention officers earn ...

If In-Flight Calling is Outlawed, Only outlaws will have in-flight calling...

... or something like that.

They're kidding, right?

In the telecommunications space, most people think the US is a third world country.

You can get better phones and service in India and China than you can in the US, and the EU has already approved cell phone use in-flight (using an on-board micro tower and satellite uplink).

I think it's more annoying to be walking down the street and have someone yelling into their cell phone, or to have the checkout line stalled because some person wants to finish their conversation as opposed to interacting with the cashier. How about we make those illegal too!

Oh, and I didn't hear anyone complaining when satellite phone service was available on almost every US carrier.

The only ban ...

I support your ban on in-car cell phone use.....where do I sign????

Seriously, this is a pointless bill, most likely issued to get themselves into the headlines. Honestly, things we despise? I can think of a LOT more useful things to ban, such as l...

Actually, research shows that holding the phone vs. hands free makes no difference. The distraction is the same. It's even indicated that reaction times are reduced to the level of driving while intoxicated.

Yea man I completely agree with your post...technology wise we are like a 3'rd world country. If I had the money I'd be in Germany or England. 😈

Do we really need this?

The FAA already has said it's a no-go, do we really need to legislate what society and the FAA already have decided upon?

If this bill passes, on every flight I'm on, I'm going to have an obnoxiously loud one-way conversation to nobody in particular, but not be on my cell phone. Sure, it'll be annoying and obnoxious as hell, but not illegal!
out of curiosity is what is the main reason they want to make this illegal? is it because of people being loud? or does it have more to do with frequencies and what not?

I don't get you guys!

Out of all the posts on this topic, not one of them opposes this bill because they don't like the concept of it.

Do you guys really want to be stuck next to someone leading a conference call for 5 1/2 hours from JFK to LAX?
So long as the person speaks in a reasonable tone of voice, I don't think I would mind at all.

Have you ever sat next to some people (or worse between two people) who were having an animated conversation on a cross country flight? What is the diffe...

Stupid Democrats

for the love on God concentrate on something important! 👿
As a Republican, I wouldn't put it past some people on my side from jumping on this, as well.

The real point is that if society has reached a point that we're legislating common courtesy, we're in a lot more trouble than I thought.

What next? H...

So Platypus, what does being a Democrat have to do with this? Jealous because these two moron Democrats came up with it before a Republican moron could think of it?

Good

Atleast I can friggin relax without some nitwit talking to his wife or vice versa. And please don't tell me its the only time one can do it, you're at the friggin airport several hours before takeoff.

Maybe criminalization is a bit much, but some sorta fine would be well in order.
