Why are cell companies hated so much? This story is case in point.

You SHOULD NOT sign a two year contract unless 1 of 2 reasons pop up:

1: Free Phone, or cheaper phone.
2: Promotional Plan

Any other reason is pure thievery. This is weird news. If you go into an AT&T store, and just want to sign up for a number, with a SIM, without getting a phone, because you already have a phone, you should NOT sign ANY yearly contract.

Every other cell phone provider doesn't require you to do this.

Never has unlocking an iPhone and using T-Mobile seemed like such a good idea. I was just gonna do the contract, but with this news, I'm hacking it.

Greedy pigs.

not the 1.1.3

but you can downgrade 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. Then you can jailbreak it, then hack it. I'm sure the unlock and jailbreaking for 1.1.3 will come out after feburary's Development Kit comes out from Apple. The hacker community is waiting for that to be released before hacking 1.1.3. I think 1.1.4 will be out with that release. I'm not sure.

But the answer is an eternal "yes". You will always be able to unlock the iPhone. Jobs and Apple aren't good enough to keep a world of hackers from unlocking the iPhone.

Take THAT apple, and AT&T.

You sure about that? Last I heard, you have to sign at least a 1 year with VZW if you don't want an INpulse plan.

Also, how are you so sure about Sprint and T-Mobile letting you get on a standard (non-prepay) plan with no contract?

I read that you could buy your phone outright and get no commitment in Consumer Reports, the Jan or Dec issue. At least, that's what I read.

Further studies conducted by me calling customer support for each carrier gave me THIS information:

Sprint: will make you sign a two year commit if you bring in your own sprint phone. (Jerks.) So if you plan on signing up, at least get a free phone with your two year contract, then switch out the phone and sell it on ebay.

Alltel: will let you on a current price plan with no commitment. (This company has some things going well for them.)

T-Mobile: They will make you sign a one year agreement if you bring in your own phone. OR you can do "Flexpay", where you just pay the first month outright....

You have the option now of not doing a contract. If you purchase a phone its at full retial though. Or just bring your own phone. Same plan and feature prices.

ricerhater is correct...

You can now take a no contract option with the same plans that a contract will get you if you either pay full price or bring your own compatible phone. Just head into an AT&T store to get this. I don't know if they are charging for the SIM but I imagine the cost would be minimal if anything but you'd still get the activation fee on your first bill.

Hope that helps calm your nerves there chainmail!

I called AT&T. They will let me do a no contract if I have my own phone, but there are only 4 price plans to choose from, all of which are more expensive than regular plans.

Nice try, though. I too used to think you could just bring in your own phone and sign up. You can, but there's limits.

I'm not sure when you called. I work for AT&T and I can tell you the prices are the same. The only difference is the price of the phone. It updated sometime ago.

There has never been any mandate that you must sign a contract. I have been working w/ Cingular/ AT&T Wireless and Mobility for over 4 years. There is no mandate to sign a contract however, there are set backs to not signing. Without signing you do not get mobile to mobile mins; this however can be added for $9.99.

Most stores will try to tell you that the minumum is 1 year contract. This is not so!!! The reason that people do not want to tell you this is that it is counted just as a pre-paid sale for them.

Also think about marketing. If VZW has better reception in an Area and you were selling ATTT would you advertise that VZW had better reception. No!! Of course not.

Retard, please,

the freakin news story on phonescoop.com AND engadget.com clearly state you must do a two year contract with the Sim card service.

Don't come on here and rant things that don't make sense.
