AT&T has made SIM cards available on its web site that can be purchased without a handset. The price of the SIM card is $5 after a $5 rebate. It can be bought with or without a contract, including for pre-paid service. It can be used with an existing or other unlocked handset.

Just when you thought AT&T was making alot of money before...

As someone who knows a fair amount about cell phones there is only one reason why AT&T would want to do this. Money.

An amazing strategy to have customers sign up without having to buy equipment. Wow very nice you think.

1) how long will your existing phone last? new unlocked phone you say? well then where is the manufacturer warranty? if your new phone has a problem don't bother calling AT&T about it.

2)AT&T obviously doesn't get their phones for free from nokia/HTC/motorola/samsung/lg/etc. They pay for them. Them just giving you a sim card and no phone is only making them more money. Less money they have to spend on the consumer. Plus your signing a 2 year contract HA! why not just rob the customer a little more. Now they ha...

They "took it back" today, saying that you don't have to do a contract.

Which is still a little fishy. There's obviously a catch.

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH

I take back everything wrong I said in other posts related to AT&T.

I was misinformed, apparently, by engadget.com when they said that you can get the sim card with only a two year contract.

This news feed, that dates to sunday morning, indicates you don't have to have a contract.

The question now is, if I opt out of a contract, what am I losing?
wait, nevermind. the jerks on phonescoop updated the post today at noon, instead of posting an new story.

engadget.com was right all along.

hmm...

Greedy pigs

Why are cell companies hated so much? This story is case in point.

You SHOULD NOT sign a two year contract unless 1 of 2 reasons pop up:

1: Free Phone, or cheaper phone.
2: Promotional Plan

Any other reason is pure thievery. This is weird news. If you go into an AT&T store, and just want to sign up for a number, with a SIM, without getting a phone, because you already have a phone, you should NOT sign ANY yearly contract.

Every other cell phone provider doesn't require you to do this.

Never has unlocking an iPhone and using T-Mobile seemed like such a good idea. I was just gonna do the contract, but with this news, I'm hacking it.

Greedy pigs.
can u still get a hack for ifone with the new software version?

You sure about that? Last I heard, you have to sign at least a 1 year with VZW if you don't want an INpulse plan.

Also, how are ...

You have the option now of not doing a contract. If you purchase a phone its at full retial though. Or just bring your own phone. Same plan and feature prices.

ricerhater is correct...

You can now take a no contract option with the same plans that a contract will get you if you either pay full price or bring your own compatible phone. Just head into an AT&T store to get this. I don't know if they are ch...

There has never been any mandate that you must sign a contract. I have been working w/ Cingular/ AT&T Wireless and Mobility for over 4 years. There is no mandate to sign a contract however, there are set backs to not signing. Without signing you do n...

1 Year

You can always get your unlocked phone and take it to a store and they will activate the phone with a 1 year contract and a free sim card....

New Info

Actually At&t launched a new no commitment plan where if you have your own equipment or buy the device out right you dont have to sign a contract. Some insight for all you who are jumping the gun and bashing the company.
Then why is this Sim card "newsworthy" on Phonescoop.com and Engadget? I mean, it doesn't make sense at all! This isn't "news" unless AT&T will only do 2 year contracts on the SIM card only. This doesn't make a bit of sense.

2 year contract.....

😡

come on at&t. Atleast let us do a one year contract when a customer is not even getting a "FREE" phone.

First we don't get a discount with iphone. Then we had to renew a 2 year contract just to get the iphone plan and now this...

Well, they definitely should not charge anything for an ETF b/c there are no costs for them to recover but I bet they still try to stick that 175 to you.

This is why I dumped at&t and went to US Cellular, at&t customer service doesn't care about you or me and half the time when you call they have no clue what they are doing. I don't get that incompetence with USCC. I have 3 friends also that will also ...

While I don't agree with the practice of doing this, it makes perfect sense WHY they are doing it. The idea is that some people don't want any of the phone with AT&T's lineup and want to use their unlocked GSM phone but use AT&T's serivice. I don't ag...

Really, there's no incentive to do this. You may as well take the free/cheap phone and sell it.

Check the other threads and topics here folks...

You CAN get the service now with no contract when you go to the store and either buy the phone full price or bring your own compatible phone. No contract, no ETF... maybe a small price for the SIM a...
