Why no AWS 1700MHz support?

What is up with the OEMs not making phones to support AWS? You would think that since carriers like T-Mobile will be launching AWS 3G, SE would atleast show off new phones that are Quad-band 3G. Everything still can't be Tri-band 3G.

Could it be because TMobile hasnt sold a SE phone for a VERY long time? I would think so! And dude... Chill out. You will get your 1700MHz phones. They will likely be Moto, Samsung & Nokia...

Still they could atleast put the bands on the phones, so people will have them, and can buy them from the OEM.

What valid reason would they have? 1700MHz is not used by many carriers. In fact, I think that TMO is the only one who DOES use this band. Everyone else uses 850/1900/2100 i think. It would be FAR too much for them to include an additional radio to support 1700MHz for a market that isnt even developed....

AT&T bought AWS spectrum, but hasn't said what they plan on doing with it. They are just greedy, since they have alot of spectrum in the 850/1900MHz bands. Plus, there was an article last month that said that countries such as South America, and other places plan on bidding on AWS spectrum to make it a standard in the Americas.

Pure speculation. Until there is an ACTUAL need for ALL manufacturers to develop handsets with he 1700 band, i foresee that the pickings will be slim. As for what the 1700 band will be developed for is anyones guess when it comes to ATT. Right now the popularity, on a GLOBAL scale, for 3g does not include the 1700 band....

How are they greedy? I mean no more or less then any other corporation? I don't see ATT buying a German carrier?

As far as umts in Latin America, as well as Canada they use the 850/1900 UMTS, or 2100 depending.

The main reason no one else uses 1700 was that fact that when most carriers rushed the 3g out the door. They wanted with the cheapest form of 3g just so they could say they had it when Europe was building it out. When Att launched their 3g network they were still building out the old 2g one. Most carriers went with the less expensive choice and it is also the most common international band too. T-mo has stuck to the 1700mhz band I was told due to its higher speeds and faster connection time it will have with the phones. Upload and downloads will run at 20-30% faster speeds on the lower bandwidth vs the 2100Mhz band.

It's the stupid US gov't that won't [and now can't] align with the rest of the world to have 2100MHz free.

They are also in the way of TMo being able to use 1700MHz.

Well Sony singed a 3 or 4 year deal in novemeber to make 3g phones for t-mo usa. They are planing on launching in mid 2008. The last info i was told that Nokia and Moto were also on board to launch the same time. Currently T-mo had 3 different 3g phones out, they just dont have the network up to use yet. The Nokia 6263, the samsung t439 and t639 all are out but not activated on 3g yet.
