Sounds Ridiculous

I don't get it. Why not ban phones is public, period. Why planes are different then trains, busses, offices or bus stops for that matter.

A plan ride is vastly different from most other public spaces. Even completely ignoring the electronic aspects of it all; physically, socially & psychologically, an airplane is a completely different environment from what most people face every day. There's already an incredible amount of factors that aggrivate human behavior, and adding another factor (some @$$hole yakking away to his stock broker about how rich he is) is the absolute last thing anyone wants to deal with when they cannot go anywhere for hours at a time.

The other places, on the other hand, are far different - Busses? They're far louder than planes, and you're on a bus for minutes at a time. Likewise with trains, you can physically move around & away from the offender...

Um. . . I obviously meant "plane" in the above instances where "plan" appears.

The differences you point out are definitely valid, but not fundamental. You are stuck with listening to that conversation on the bus, just like you are on the plane. The point is that the differences being quantitive and not qualitive, why would we sacrifice ability to make a call on the plane? I use many methods of transportation. As a policy I don't pick up the phone on the bus or on a train, or in ameeting for that matter. However if it is important enough I should be able to pick up anywhere. My personal guideline for what is "important enough"? When I feel that people around me would be understanding of the situation and would forgive me for interrupting the meeting, or their peacefull bus ride. These emergencies don't happen that ofte...

I don't mind an indefinite ban on in-flight calling. I think this ban is best for all parties involved for reasons already stated above. Having the ability to access data networks and/or text messaging would be acceptable however, and I hope this is still in works.

That's great that you do your best to be considerate of others but a lot of people are not like that.

People are often impolite using their phones in public. They should be close talking their phones so that the person next to them can't hear what they are saying. I do it all the time on hotel shuttle busses.
If some DS talks "LOUD" because "SORRY I TALK LOUD" it's not ok.
On aircraft, there are only 2-6 lines out anyway. And it costs $$'s. If someone gets loud, the Flight attendants politely ask them to talk quieter. If that doesn't work, I'll fix the problem.
I have no problem if people talk almost anywhere, as long as I DON'T hear them.
There are way too many RFI and EMI potential issues with it to fully resolve. The system on aircraft are FAA-TSO'd and built to different standards than $10 GSM throw aways.
