Skype today announced that it has agreed to acquire group messaging service provider GroupMe for an undisclosed sum. GroupMe offers group messaging products for mobile phones, which can help participants formulate plans with or pass along information to groups rather than individuals via text message. According to Skype, the deal will help it offer a more fully formed suite of communications products. Skype didn't announce any immediate plans for GroupMe's services. Skype acquired the Qik video chat service earlier this year. Skype itself was acquired by Microsoft in May. T-Mobile recently added group messaging features to several of its Android smartphones.
