Unicode 11 to Include Swappable Hair Styles and Women Heroes

The emoji that will appear in Unicode 11.0 have been finalized, according to the Unicode Consortium, and new options will be available for hair, skin, and gender. Some 157 new characters are included in Unicode 11.0. With the core characters set, operating system developers and device makers can adopt the base code ahead of their own customizations. Some of the new options will let men and women emoji select from various hair styles (including red-haired and bad), while new hero and villain styles support new gender and skin tone options. There are new colors available for leg, foot, bone, and tooth emoji; new animals such as badgers, swans, peacocks, and llamas; new food such as mangos, leafy greens, and moon cakes; and many new places, activities, games, objects, and symbols. The Unicode Consortium will release the final code for Emoji 11.0 in June, and expects them to reach consumer devices by August or September.

The Unicode Consortium today proposed adding 67 new emoji as part of Unicode 11, including a variety of faces, body parts, food items, animals, clothing items, objects, and activities. Some of the face options include smiling face with cape, face with uneven eyes and wavy mouth, and face with glistening eyes.
Unicode 10 Adds 56 New Emoji

The Unicode Consortium this week announced Unicode 10, which includes 56 new emoji characters and four new scripts. Some of the new emoji include facial expressions (raised eyebrow, hand-over-mouth), more men and women (bearded man, woman in head garb), hand symbols, food (dumpling, fortune cookie), clothing items, animals (dinosaurs, bugs), vehicles (flying saucer, sled), and a curling stone.
Unicode Accepts Some Google-Designed Women Emoji

Google today said the Unicode Technical Committee, the organization that oversees the development of emoji, has agreed to add some of the professional women emoji Google proposed earlier this year. Specifically, Unicode will add 11 (of the 13 suggested) professional female emoji in all skin colors.
