Re: and don't use it?
I didn't say that they could do it for free. I said they could do it.

Re: and don't use it?
I understand the fact that network capacity is not free. I mean that AT&T need to invest in order to support their customer's devices properly. They haven't done that.

Re: and don't use it?
They already have 2G towers in place. They can add or replace. Or, they can put a tower everywhere Verizon already has one.
Re: and don't use it?
Yes... It is broken (or at least it will be tomorrow at 12:00).
Re: and don't use it?
Ummm... yes, they could put up a tower "on every f-ing corner". They should either stop selling devices that they can't support, or fix their network.
Why is it a manual process?
The phone knows when a call is dropped. The phone knows when there is no coverage (or poor coverage). Why can't the phone automatically send the data back to AT&T automatically?
Re: Another misconception!
So... in other words, Ford did something about it.
Re: Another misconception!
oops! Toyota = Ford dealership
Re: Another misconception!
So, if I buy a car from FORD, and the tires fail prematurely (made by FIRESTONE), do I return the tires to Firestone, or do I take up the issue with Toyota at their dealership?
Ford is responsible to make sure the products that they sell (whether or not they manufacture them) will satisfy their customers. This was proven by a lawsuit several years ago for some tires that DID fail.
AT&T has their own testing labs that "certify" these ...
Re: Another misconception!
AT&T puts their logo on the phone, therefore, they should make sure it works properly before they sell it.
If they shouldn't be held responsible for the equipment they sell, they should cut out all of this subsidy B.S. and stick to selling only the service.
Cool!
If only I still had a need for a home phone...
V70 Refresh?
This looks like a new version of the old V70. I loved that phone. They should make one without the 'bling' for those of us with taste.
Re: Who needs it?
Just wait a bit until Google starts advertising on it. I guess it all depends on your definition of "free".
Re: Already been done... (music has anyway)
It also has a line-out, so you don't have to use the FM transmitter if your vehicle has a line-in feature. Unfortunately, you will lose the RDS information that is transmitted to the vehicle from the Venturi. The Venturi display will still show the information (caller ID, song title, etc).
Re: Sounds good to me!
Too bad they probably won't be smartphones. My guess is that it will be entry-level rebadged phones
Re: WOW
Or how about they are buying this spectrum so they can broadcast advertisements to us wherever and whenever... directly to our super awesome Android devices!
Re: Already Done!!!
No. Motorola demonstrated WiMAX (802.16e). Similar, but not the same.
Advertising
Let the advertising begin! Yea.
Am I the only one not looking forward to being bombarded with ads on my phone? I guess it is inevitable.
Re: British Telecom
I am pro-consumer.
Sprint is up against some pretty huge (and growing) competition. Some of which have some substantial foreign backing. As Sprint's market-share shrinks and the US dollar weakens, it becomes more feasible for a big foreign company to pick it up.
Re: British Telecom
What makes you think that? I don't think it seems to absurd considering what Sprint is up against.
British Telecom
Anyone else think that this might speed up the BT purchase of Sprint?
Re: Coverage?
Thanks for clearing that up!
Re: Coverage?
If they are going to have the same coverage as Verizon, does that mean that verizon doesn't own the towers they are currently using? Is Qualcomm deploying the network instead of each carrier?
The theory behind the responses would make me also assume that since both Verizon and Sprint are CDMA providers, that they will have the same coverage (which I know is not true).
I understand that this is a broadcast technology, but I guess what I don't understand ...
Re: What chipset?
Is there another solution?
Coverage?
Does anyone know what the coverage is expected to be with AT&T? I know that the coverage for Verizon is very limited.
protection or profit?
Are they doing this roll-out with a concern for "protection" or Profit? My guess is the latter.
A name for it....
The "Pocket Billboard"... as if we aren't exposed to enough advertising already.
Re: Are you kidding me?
Ditto...
Re: So much for ATT
Yeah... AT&T really needs to launch a spectacular phone to try to gain some traction. I don't know... maybe something like the IPHONE!
hmmm...
Re: why?
I think Google also currently gets their map data from Navteq. It should be interesting to see how this one plays out. I am sure they want to make back some of the $8 Billion.
Re: Absurd
"their solutions are better than many other companies"
My point exactly. If you want to good stuff, you have to pay for it. Qaulcomm knows what they have and they know what their competitors are offering. I am not saying it is the ethical thing to do, but from a business standpoint it seems like a good short-term strategy. Once you make all of your customers mad (as they are), they will either cry to the ...
Re: Absurd
I am not a huge fan of Qualcomm, but I don't agree with the EU's actions. There are other alternatives available if these companies don't agree with the royalty rates of Qualcomm. It is not like they are being forced to use their technology. Qualcomm had the insight to research, develop, and patent the technology. For that, they should be rewarded. If they are expecting too much reward, then get the technology somewhere else ...
Re: RIP CDMA
Does anyone think this has anything to do with Qualcomm's recent issues?
Re: But what kind of content?
Correct me if I am wrong, but the internet is only used for three things: Porn, YouTube, and MySpace... right?
Re: Wow. . .
Yeah... Never saw that one coming
I still don't understand why everyone I see at the airport carries one of their devices. Is the competition that bad?
Re: Sad
I see a ton more Katanas in the wild recently than any single model Samsung phone (even if you count the A900 and A900mm as one model  ). After about 20 software version changes on the A900, the thing still doesn't work.
As for the signal strength requirements, anybody can go buy the Qualcomm chipset and stick a paperclip and some resistors to it and call it a phone. Sure, there is some tuning involved for ...
Re: Sad
I agree.
Sanyo handsets are great. The designs aren't the prettiest, but they work great and they can take a decent beating. It makes me sad to see them struggle when other companies with inferior products are prospering with just brute force (*cough* *cough* Samsung).
Oh well... I guess that's business.
Re: This sound good on paper but...
This article might be misleading you a bit. It isn't like you will be able to access someones storage by just bringing your phone near it. For data access there will still be authorization required before the other device will have access to any services. Also, the elimination of the passkey does not mean that the link will no longer be encrypted. Basically, it is left up to the product developers to produce an interface ...
Re: Ouch
I don't see the relationship between this article and AT&T. The patent dispute only affects CDMA carriers. Am I missing something?
Re: MOT now 3rd behind SS
I question the numbers of SS. My guess is that they sold 20 mil units and sent out 17 mil as warranty replacements.
