Cingular Cripples SMS Application Development in US

I am a developer/entrepreneur working on a unique SMS application for US markets. My team and I have jumped though hoops to retrofit our application to fit the ridiculous stronghold carriers have on SMS in the US. While it is almost impossible to run an interesting and profitable SMS business that requires user interactivity via SMS short codes, (unless you are Google or some other conglomerate)... with this new development...it just got more difficult.

Cingular just announced that they will no longer allow alternative payment mechanism (credit card, etc) for any sms based program. This means that companies that want to run a legitimate SMS service where users opt-in, receive text messages and are able to reply via a short code will not b...

Using the email gateway to send multimedia to mobile phones

Anyone out there had any experience getting a response from carriers about commercial use of the mobile email gateway to send multimedia to mobile phones. If you want to send a video to a phone it is clearly possible, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it through the shortcode process (unless you want to wait for premium MMS).
I find it hard to get anyone on the phone at a carrier and I haven't yet found any useful info on any of the development forums.

Info? Thoughts? Comments?

DataPilot and the A900M

(Also posted in the A900 forum...)

I just purchased a A900M and also dl'd Susteen's DataPilot, but...I can't get the phonebool syncing to work. I'm also using the OEM USB cable, so I assume I do not the Susteen USB cable to connect the phone-to-PC (or do I). It also looks like there are some issues listed in the Susteen knowledge base regarding connectivity the A900M. I'm waiting for them to respond to my query.

Does anyone out there have the A900M working correctly with DataPilot?

Does anyone know if there is other similar software available that is dialed in for the A900M?

All I want to do is read-write and sync the phonebook and contacts.

***The OEM USB cable does work okay to link the phone-to-PC as a mass storage device.

OMA DD with Samsung C417

Hi,

We are testing our content delivery application, and it works fine. We also added support for OMA DD, which enables us to bill a customer when the download is "900 Success".

Unfortunately we found out that on the Samsung C417, each time we send an mp3 through OMA DD file, the message we get is "Download Cancelled". Without canceling anything it's automatic. Do you ahve any ideas why. Other than using OMA DD, we can download files perfectly well.

Thanks for the help and insights!

Best Regards,

DM

Black Berry 7105T and RPC take over?

So recently my black berry has made a few calls out while sitting on my desk in locked mode. I charge my phone through USB on my computer. Last time I tried to do a windows update, it tried to DL BB software 5.1. I Googled the exact link, and it directed me to computer forensics sites. I called tmobile asking about this issue, and that now whenever I plug my BB into any computer, it will install Blackberry C++ and Gtalk.(wich is always running in the background on my BB) The guy at tmobile BB tech said, " I don't know what you think you beleive is happening, but BB's cant be controlled." I looked futher into it since that guy did not even know what the NT system was, nor that win2000 existed. I did find a PDF on blackberry forensics, ...

ANN: VistaDB 3.0 leads .NET developers to Windows Mobile 5.0

The recent success of the Motorola Q Smartphone and the Palm Treo 700w Pocket PC have triggered demand for components and tools that enable .NET developers to build mobile database applications for these devices. Vista Software's recently released VistaDB 3.0 ushers in the next generation of mobile development by enabling .NET developers to build fully managed and embedded SQL database applications for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Compact Framework.

Flip Phone Screens (outside)

I would like to know when companies first began to manufacture flip phones with the screen on the outside. What company did it first? Did it show the time only, caller ID, etc? When was the first one sold? Where did you get this information?

I'm a college student and I'm doing a research project. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How do I........

OK, I'm in no way connected to any manufacturer of cell phones, cell phone technology or other tech related industry. I do though however have a design concept idea for the development of a cell phone unit that would be attractive to a target core of some 10m+ potential buyers world wide. I have attempted to contact the larger players via contact forms on differing web sites at Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. SO far no response.

I abide by the old concept idea of nothing ventured, nothing gained. This could be something, it could be nothing. I understand the pitfalls regarding disclosure of ideas and am not prepared to do that in any way, shape or form on a public access forum.

I am just looking for pointers as to how to approach ...

video encoding for Motorola SLVR

Hi there,

Had anybody had any experience encoding video
onto a Motoorla SLVR? I use Pinnacle Studio 10
to encode my video into a resolution that's
lower than the screen (176x220) in mpeg4. I
thought it should be able to play, but it
doesn't. I then tried my Motorola Phone Tool,
which includes some kind of encoding. It
worked, but the encoded video is only a small
fraction of the screen size, making the video
not viewable at all.

Any help/advises appreciated.

Text Messaging and your Bank Account....

I had an idea earlier today..

Does anyone agree with it??

Have your cell number tied to your bank account, and every time a transaction goes through, you get a text message.

I think it would be useful when you (or your spouse) make a withdrawl from an ATM, or when a check you sent out two weeks ago finally is cashed by your bank.

It would also help to prevent access you didn't approve into your account by someone else....

Does anyone agree?

Vehicular Repeaters and AMPS

Just read an interesting little post about having 3W amplifiers. Do NOT buy these thinking that it will assist your phone. In CDMA, the inability of a handset to demodulate the paging channel is a function of the receiver sensitivity of the handset, and most importantly the antenna. The only thing a 3W amp will do is to effectively negatively impact the loading capacity of the sector you are in, or the sectors you are in if in a soft-handoff condition. In CDMA, they are entirely ineffective.

Vehicular Repeaters: I've seen a few of these that were being marketted for NEXTEL. Same thing. It would take an extremely expensive model to overcome the near-far problem in CDMA, which means that it will only serve to raise the overall noise floor o...

Handset Market Share question - Hot?? or widely used - Rich ???

I'm part of a team looking to develop a content idea for mobile phones. One of the first questions by developers is to identify the Make/Model of your TARGET mobile phones.

My app needs a 'smarter' generation phones that can receive SMS, access internet, utilize MP3 or audio files, etc. These are gated by OS type - Symbian, Palm, Widows Maobile, UIQ, are likely targets.

But there's hundreds if not thousands of 'recent' and current models by dozens of manufacturers.

Is there good sites where one can access a database of phones and ones that can provide marketshare numbers base don recent productions or other criteria? Ideas?

How does one choose a broad and representative array of US and international model phones as development...
