My take, more positive

Oct 27, 2002 by mobilelawyer

I like this phone’s features, and, for me, at least, it has few shortcomings. I love the large capacity phone book, further enhanced by the ability to store additional names on the SIM. I must have IR and the ability to transfer information between the phone and my Palm and laptop. I am able to use the hands free accessory from my old 6190, and the phone is physically very solid.

This is my second 6340. The first was accidentally smashed and had to be replaced. The first phone would occasionally spontaneously power off. Some other 6300 series users have reported similar problems, so that issue may not be confined to the 6340. I have had none of those problems with my second phone.

My home market is TDMA. On TDMA, sound quality is quite good, and RF is superior to my 3360. I have not had many forays into GSM. GSM voice quality on a trip to California varied from very good to poor. Some calls were plagued by hiss and switching noise. Good quality GSM calls sounded like a landline.

The GAIT spec does not provide for seamlessly switching between TDMA and GSM. If the signal gets weak enough, the call will drop, and the phone may switch to a different network: TDMA to GSM, or vice- versa. In my home area, if the phone loses Cingular TDMA, it will sometimes switch to T-Mobile, and show “Cingular Extend”. If I did not have the Cingular Nation Plan, I am afraid I might be charged for roaming in my home market!

All in all, I am pleased with the phone.

Incredibly DURABLE

i had this phone for maybe 5 years???????????

I dropped it and even submerged it, but it didn't stop working

Now it was upgrading time and my phone was acting up, like some keys didnt press that well but it despite that worked.

So i did a stress test by throwing the phone, twice, the first time it cracked the front facing, the next time it was utter distruction. the phone itself looked in shape, minus the heavy the scratching but the battery was cracked, screen messed up, and it was just a hard toss to the road.

The phone was REAALLLLLLLLLLLLLY all i needed at the time. I mean the games were great. The ringtones were polyphonic kind but were still loud and served me not many missed calls.

This phone is really impressive, I know this is going to be hard to believe, but i had the phone when I was biking it fell out into the sidewalk, so i got it. But i didn't realize until i used it that the top onswitch antennae panel was missing. it turned out to be on the sidewalk, was found later that night, still in great shape. Placed back on and still worked like a charm.

Blah.

Great features; operationally deficient

This phone has a lot of great features which all seem to work well.

However, in actual use of the phone, I have had nothing but problem after problem after problem.

It is very unstable - I've lost calls; the phone has completely shut down in the middle of a call and come back on for no apparent reason; I get buzzing noises at times; the headset worked fine at times, and at other times generated a very loud high-pitched "scream" (just so happens Cingular customer service was on the other end when this happened once - she was very unhappy about the loud noise in her ear, but offered no sympathy for my hearing or help to resolve the problem); reception is completely unpredictable from one minute to the next (same location, or worse driving - even if in local network area, where I've never had problems before).

I'm in Florida, and it's been nothing but problems with this phone here. Worse yet, Cingular has not made any attempt to resolve what has been a "painful" experience for me the entire time. What a disappointment, in that I've had Cell One/Cingular in Chicago for years, and have had nothing but good things to say - I definitely had great service and reception and stability/reliability there with an older Nokia 6120.
