I love my Epix

Oct 29, 2009 by dirtymenace

I have had this phone for 7 months now and I have not had a problem with it at all! I've been able to utilize a lot of apps & programs made for it and I can't ask for a better phone!

QWERTY keyboard is the right size for me; not too small, not too big. Very durable phone; i drop it about 3 times a day and it looks like normal wear and tear!

The Windows Media does not support AVI video format, so I have a free DivX app which allows for AVI playback!

Facebook app works fine, but i usually use the mobile format through Internet Explorer!

i use VLC player on my computer, but watch from my bed; there's an app which turns your Epix into a remote control for VLC on your computer!

one glitch of the phone (which i heard was because of the Windows OS) is that once in a while the speaker sound shuts off and you have to turn the phone off and back on to get the sound to start working. I have Windows Mobile Pro for my Epix.

GREAT PHONE!

NOT SAMSUNG'S FAULT

Oct 17, 2009 by mymy5441

I recently got the epix as an exchange for my motorola Q9 which i loved...which wasn't easy to do with att i thought i would upgrade due to the minor issues i had with the Q...bad idea. while i believe the epix is a great phone most of it's problems come from the fact that att only gives refubished phone and per the company (Samsung) att is unable to repair their technology which meant i had to exchange this phone 5xs before i got one that actually worked... even if you buy a new phone via a store & it breaks att will only give you a refurbished phone. if you use ur phone for strictly business this refurb. is not for you. otherwise it's a pretty good phone

pros
great wide screen
touch screen
stylus
3g/wifi
video/camera ok
onscreen favorites

cons
sounds goes out
unable to find files
ring tones don't work on this phone
bluetooth only works on phone calls no music or private videos
would rather exit instead of ok
does'nt ring loud enough
freezes up

if i had to choose it all over again i would stick with my moto Q9 it's a way better phone.

PROS:
-nice big screen
-Great internet browser just like on a PC
-optical mouse a great feature works great for one hand navigation

-voice command works nice for accessing phone, media, messaging ect.
-samsung added their own today screen which adds access to favorite contacts e-mail and messaging also att navigator.
-easy to apply your own ringtones wallpapers
-fast accessing programs and browsing 3g on att network works GREAT!!

Still not sure about the EPIX..??

I have my eye on the Samsung Jack, as the phone I am replacing is an original BlackJack, which I have really liked. The middle side of my BlackJack has a hairline crack and the phone is getting a little flaky.

I got a good deal on a refurb Epix thru ATT, and have been somewhat pleased but also disappointed.

The first big difference is the OS. Pro vs. Standard. I have found out that I really a one-hand phone guy, and Standard is much better for that. The Pro interface is more complex and layered than Standard. Things take longer to find and are buried deeper.

The touch screen can get annoying also. If it's not locked, don't put it in your pocket, you will be randomly clicking things all over the place.

The QWERTY keyboard is lighted, but still harder to see than the Blackjack (too shiny).

The phone is a fair amount thicker than the BlackJack. Borderline for my pocket. Both the Epix and new Jack list at .5 inches thick, but side by side, the Jack is noticeably thinner. Not sure what's up with that.

The shiny star on the Epix is the Optical mouse pad, I find it really works great, much better than the stylus. My biggest beef with the phone is trying to do things while I'm driving, i.e, scrolling, missed call, dialing (although the Voice command works pretty good if it is quiet around you).

The bottom line is that Windows standard is easier to use with one hand than Windows Pro.

I'm going to try some enhancement software before my final decision. SPB has some software I might try FTouch.
I will most likely get the Jack.

This phone is by far, THE WORST!

I originally upgraded to the Eternity in December, after calling in 3 times for a replacement I was told I had to switch models. The rep suggested the Epix. I had problem after problem with the Epix. Each one was worse than the last. I finally (after some begging and complaining got them to put me back on the Eternity). Save yourself some stress and headaches, skip this phone and get the Jack.

Pros:
Well I guess if I have to pick one....the fact it syncs with outlook.

Cons:
Battery life (I have to charge it 2-3 times a day and I'm not talker. I mainly text and IM)

Reception (most of my friends have AT&T they will have full bars and I have a tower if I am lucky and when I try to make a call the phone refuses to let the call go through. Let someone call me and they go to voicemail.)

Accessories are hard to find (Some reason, not quite sure why LOL,this phone is not too popular so it is really hard to get accessories for it.)

Camera (only a 2mp)

Ringtones for calls and alarms (I make my own and this phone only allows you to use what they have on it unless you are good at hacking registries)

Modem and a lot of features this phone hase AT&T has locked out unless you get a hack for it.

Wasted 4 months of my time!

LOVE IT!!!!!!

I own the epix for about 4 months. I do love it! i have owned the blackjack, the red blackjack 2, and the white n pink blackjack 2. I liked those phones alot. Then I bought the epix. It was expensive but i got it when it was "new" and without a contract. I have ATT n Im in Louisiana. I have no major problems with it. Once i downloaded the Sims game it started to freeze when i played it a lot. Some times the sound doesnt work but that can be fixed by turning the phone off then back on. i receive all txt and mms. I receive all calls. I dont have the data package so i cant give any review right know about the internet usage. i like that you can have a mouse or not if you choose. i like how you have the option to use the touchscreen keyboard or the regular one. i like how it isnt "all" touch. i am due for an upgrade in july but i really like this phone so i maynot get another phone for awhile.

Don't buy!

Have had this phone since Sept. and should have returned within the 30 days alloted, but was on the road so much, never had the chance. Chief complaints:
Ring volume - this device works on an ascending ring, unless I'm watching the phone, I'm never able to catch it ringing. I've got it set for four rings, and have applied the fix recommended to increase db, but it is still not acceptable.
Forced SLOG Dump - Every single day, at times more than once a day I receive this message. When this happens, the phone does not receive calls, text or email notifications. I'm learning from other posts there is an issue with the Qualcomm radio being the cause of the problem. I'm not a techie but think this also has to do with the next major issue
Signal - I drop more calls with this phone on the same network that I've been with for 9 years. Signal strength is horrible. When driving, I will without fail lose a call. I think the longest I've held an uninterupted call is 14 min. Most drop sooner than that even when stationary.
Finally the 3G network... with the poor connectivity this is just about useless.

perfect for what I need

I upgraded to the Epix from my HTC 8525. What an improvement! The 8525 was a fine pda--but really a lousy phone. The Epix is a fine pda AND a fine phone!

Best Pros:
Battery life. Others may complain, but when you're used to 1/2 to 3/4 of a day of battery life, getting a whole day of talk (on bluetooth) and data is awesome!

Signal strength. I have ATT and this thing is solid in all areas.

Scroll mouse. Love love. I could never get the hang of track balls--the mouse acts more like a laptop touch pad. I use it at the fastest speed, and it works flawlessly.

Touch screen. It's not the most responsive touch screen w/your finger, but is great w/the stylus. Screen vibrates when you touch it-makes screen dialing easy.

Keypad. I love the one handed key/text pad. No more cumbersome sliding keypads. And it is very responsive. Might be a little hard to use w/large hands, though.

Others: nice, clear screen. customizable function keys (almost any key can be a function key). great sound quality. MS voice command. easy to use applications (my fav is the on screen data settings). lots of extra "goodies" that other windows devices lacked. telescoping stylus. no hassle syncing. fast 3g. solid w/my bluetooth. mp3 player. small. slim. light. attractive. headphone adapter.

Main cons:

Not many...but a few infuriating points. The WiFi is a royal PIA to use. I had to go to the forums to figure it out, but did get it to work. WiFi is also slow. Still, if I'm out of 3g territory, it's faster than non 3g speeds. Typical Windows gripes like already mentioned--the endless hassle of folders, apps that don't go far enough. The camera is average (the 8525 cam was awesome)--but does shoot video--nothing special, but useful. Haven't had it lock up yet, but I'm sure it will. Can only create word docs, no others. Most of the cool stuff, as usual, must be purchased at overinflated $$.

HORRIBLE PHONE!!!!! DON'T PURCHASE!!

Feb 3, 2009 by HyzHuni

I purchased this phone after having trouble with the Blackberry Curve. That was a huge mistake!! The phone was SO slow. I do a lot of texting and emailing from the phone. I would literally type out 3 to 4 sentences before the phone would ever show one letter. I have dealt with A LOT of Windows Mobile phones (4 HTC phones including the 2125, 8125, 8525, the Tilt, and my Husband has the Fuze, also the Palm Treo 750, and the original BlackJack) and this one is by far the worst! I wouldn't recommend this phone at all.

Pro's: The touch pad. I found it very easy
to use. It was a very nice feature to
this phone. Probably the only one!
Not really any other pro's for this
phone compared to other phones
available. It has the same benefits
as any other Windows Mobile phone.
The touch pad is the ONLY unique
feature/pro of this phone.

Cons: The phone is horribly slow!
The battery life...well I should say
what battery life. It was one of the
shortest I have seen.
The buttons are slick, small, and not
user friendly.
The phone is kinda heavy.
The screen kept lighting up on it's
own.

I only had the phone for 2 days and I couldn't take it anymore! I returned the phone and saved my upgrade. I purchased an HTC Tilt on-line and LOVE it (Better than my Husband's brand new Fuze lol)!!! For the price of the Epix it is FAR from worth it!!! I rate it a 1.5 only because I enjoyed the touch pad. Samsung needs to do better work in the future if they want to stay in the cell phone business.

solid and reliable

I have used windows mobile phones for the past two years. Windows mobile comes with its problems, which is no fault to the actual phone. The other reviews of having to navigate through folders, slow cpu and all that other crap is because of uneducated users. If you actually close programs after your done using them, the phones speed will not be compromised.

pros-
optical mouse- it works great, Makes this perfect for one handed use. I have no troubles going over the entire screen with one slide over the mouse.
windows mobile 6- is way better than 5. you can view youtube videos, hotmail is improved and 80% of the quirks from 5 have been fixed.
decent amount of memory-
Fast internet
GPS is Amazing! locks onto satellite in about 20 seconds and stays locked on.
good battery life- i get about 2+ days of constant use.
screen seems stronger than typical touch screens.
backlit keys.
bottom keys/hotkeys- GREAT! messages, calender, internet, camera, Silent-- all on one line. Very smart.
camera has good color.

cons-
NO TAB BUTTON!!! this is the worst for me. i have a touch screen, and i have a mouse, but i still need a tab button to go faster. I cannot believe this is true, as there must be a tab button somewhere.

Keys are really small. I used to have an 8525, and the keys were big. I passed on the blackjack because of the keys-- after using this one, the keys are rounded and tall which makes them easier to push than expected, but they are still cramped for my hands.

volume keys on the side adjust phone volume. They do not scroll or go up nor down. They adjust the Phone volume, not the ringer volume, which is even more useless. This can be fixed with a program, but that requires the program always be running.

overall, if you can make use of the tiny keys, this phone is Great. The lack of a tab button and the fact that it runs off windows mobile may deter some people. The true selling feature to this phone is its fast internet and optical mouse.
