This thread over at the Cingular Forums just blew my mind...

http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.i ... »

There's software out there that Cingular has been essentially trying to keep under wraps...and there's no mention of it on the US LG site either. Wth? Anyways, enjoy everyone.

It's the TU500 over in Australia, just follow the links to the software.

I downloaded the software. I have a CU500 with Cingular service. I bought a USB cable online and for some reason, my computer is detecting the cable, but not my phone. How do I get it to do this? I just want to transfer mp3's/pics from my computer to my phone and vice versa from my 1gb microSD (SanDisk). Any help would be much appreciated!

jonesbm,

It maybe your USB cable. Apparently the USB cables with the box in the middle with the chip are not compatable. Check out this link:

People, I believe the reason why (1) LG doesn't provide the sync software and (2) Cingy doesn't sell a USB cord that charges is because:

Cingular wants you to buy the Blackberry service that (1) syncs with Outlook, etc. They also want you to use a BB to surf the net (tethered to your computer), not your CU500 (tethered to your computer). I use the CU500 to surf the net (as a modem), but the battery wears out and I have to stop and plug the stupid thing in. If the USB cable charged the phone, I could surf all day long.

They are deliberately crippling this phone. That is (maybe?) also why they never fix the annoying approval for surfing the web (on the phone). They want you to surf the net on the BB to sell you more services.

I got the Mobile Action LG Handset Manager and also the USB Charger software for about $25. It works OK for changing the phone but still some issues with connecting the phone for other stuff. Works OK on my laptop and desktop at home but not at work on my Dell. I think its an issue with what IT wants or doesn't want us to do with the computers. Never could get the driver to install and make the connection.

Here's the link for the free software the Aussies get because U.S. cell companies suck. Especially Stinkular.

Good points on the BB service. I have no doubt they make things difficult to lock people into buying extra data plans and/or phones. The phone works very well with a few hacks. It is possible to get rid of the access screens for surfing the web so it's not like they couldn't issue a firmware update to alleviate it for the lay people.

As far as a data cable that charges I have thought about this a little bit. When I compare the ends on my wall charger to the ends on the data cable it is apparent why it doesn't charge. There are 3 or 4 wires missing on the data cable that are clearly the power wires. I have been considering trying to make a frankenstein connector by splicing these two connectors together but I have a feeling it would be ext...

After some farting around with a multimeter and soldering iron I got my data cable to charge and connect to the computer...details to come.

Nice work! I'll keep an eye out for the details. I have a soldering iron somewhere. This proves that Cingy could be providing a charging USB cable at almost no extra cost if they wanted to. They are deliberately crippling the phone. They want to to buy the BB service and a BB phone. AHH!

Popinjay:

I bought this cable:

http://www.gomadic.com/lg-cu500-coiled-power-hot-syn ... »

and it provides power to the phone. I can surf without the battery in the phone. I did some heavy surfing, trying to draw as much current as I could, and had no problems. Will try a phone call later.

I don't know if the phone is charging (no moving bars), but maybe it is charging without saying so.

Thanks for the tip!

Hmm...I actually bought that cable (well it was the version with a straight cord instead of coiled but it should be the same) a few weeks ago because someone on the cingular forums said it would work. It didn't appear to charge the phone without notifying you. I didn't try to take the battery out, however. I'll try that later this week and report the results.

You're right man, I pulled out the battery and the phone still ran with this thing. 😁 I think it powers the phone directly, leaving the battery out of the loop b/c I have left it over night and the battery lost charge. Not that it's any less beneficial. Nice find!

It charged the battery for me, no doubt. I was at zero and two hours later it was full. I had to turn the phone off/on to reset the battery indicator (wasn't moving during charge).

The plug to the phone was also warm during the 2.5 hours it took to charge. After full charge, the plug was cool. So, there was much more current flowing during the 2 hours it was charging.

I can do the experiment again if anyone has doubts.

Well, I take back my previous statement about it not charging the phone as well....Turns out I was thinking of an experiment I did with the OEM data cable, which did not charge the phone overnight. I had never tried leaving this cable connected long enough to see if it indeed charged the phone without notifying you, but I left it the other day and it did.

SOO in summary, AT&T is selling a cable for twice as much as the gomadic guys that has half the functionality...I'm just speechless...that's beyond asinine...
