Signal strength different on 2 phones

My wife and I just got 2 8300s to replace our 3200s. We live in a strong signal area and our 3200s always got the maximum number of signal bars. With the 8300s, my wife's phone still gets 4 bars at our house, but mine consistantly only gets 2 bars. We spend a lot of time at a campground where there is a weak signal and I am concerned that I will not be able to get a connection with my phone. We will not be there for another week or 2. Does this difference in signal strength seem strange and should I return my phone for a replacement?

Just some more information - When I first turned the phone on yesterday I had 4 bars and then it dropped down to 2 bars. That was in the same location in the house at the kitchen table. I now have 4 bars again, but it dropped down to 1 bar yesterday and lost the connection to Mobile Web. The other phone has never been less than 4 bars the entire time. What are the chances that Verizon will replace this phone with another 8300 if I take it back and explain the problem?

I would just do it. Take it back and ask for a new one under the 15 day policy. Otherwise you'll be second guessing yourself.

All of my phones is my home do the "bar dance" like you described and I can see the tower atop the local hospital 10 blocks away.

Sometimes phones are more sensitive than others so I would definitely get a new one.

Remember, accept nothing in a white box because that is a factory re-furbished unit where the red and black box indicates it is new.

LG is not noted for a great signal. For some reason, I noticed, I get a stronger signal when it it cloudy than when it is sunny. I know that sounds real stupid, but true. 😳

The Verizon signal strength is not at issue. As I said, the other 8300 and two 3200s had maximum signal strength while this 8300 varied between 1 and 4 bars. It was sitting right beside the other 3 phones. This 1 phone, out of 4, is the only one that varies in number of bars. It appears to be a bad phone.

yeah they should give you a new one right out of the box. if you take the whole thing back up there (charger, batteries, manuals, phone) You will probably get all new everything. It sounds like to me that the antenna just isn't getting good contact to the board. Most LG phones have a small metal piece below the antenna that meets a contact on the board. sometimes it gets pushed to where its half on half off. That would explain the "signal dance" as one of the posters so eloquently put it.

I took it back to the Verizon company store and explained the problem. They said that they would have to check it out. The tech said that the signal was fine in the store and that they would not exchange it for a new phone unless they could see a defect. I guess my only option is to take both 8300s back and tell them I don't like them and exchange both for some other model phone. The only other one that we were considering was the Samsung SCH-A950. Any comments on that phone.

I exchanged mine because of this issue. The first phone dropped 6 calls in 24 hours in my house. The second phone ended up keeping 3-4 bars. The second one had to go back because the camera was completely awful, more awful than the first handset. I am now on my third and now i notice that the number 2 button is sticking and its a pain in the neck when I use text messaging.

Have you given it a "review" yet? You should.

Did you try *228 on the phone with the weak signal? Sometimes I get a weak signal in my office, do *228, and it fixes the issue. I know you just got the phone, but I don't think that necessarily means the PRL is up to date for your area.

I just did after I read your post. Thanks. However, the signal has been fine all day today, even in the darkest part of Lowe's, where my wife and I both were down to zero or 1 bar. I called her and both ends of the conversation were very clear. The Verizon tech said that there was nothing with my phone when I took it in today. He asked if I had removed the battery since the weak signal yesterday and I told him that I had this morning to make sure that the SN was the same as that on the box. He thought that the hard reset fixed a possible software problem. I don't know if he's blowing smoke, but the signal has been fine for about 9 hours since I turned the phone on this morning. I have been playing with MobleWeb and it has also been f...

Just an update - it was varying between 1 and 3 bars this morning at home, so I ran the 1/4 mile to the store as soon as they opened. When I got there I only had 1 bar outside the store. They have a repeater in the store and I still only had 1 bar inside. I showed it to the tech with 1 bar signal, so he had no choice but to exchange it. It is now charging at home. I will turn it on after it is fully charged and make sure that this one is working correctly. Thanks for the responses.
