HELP!! MP3 Static When No-Service (even in standAlone mode)

Fellow VX 9800 Users please help..When i am in no service areas (i.e. as underground on the subway) i get an awful static sound when i try to use my Mp3 player..To mimic this "no-service" scenario please place ur VX9800 in standalone mode --Go to "Settings & Tools" , then "System"(press 5), then "Standalone mode" (1), and click to "On" ...then try to play MP3s and please provide me feedback if you "Do" or "Do not" receive static playback...i know the 8100 had similar issues and the "standalone mode" helped alleviate the static problem, but i still am encountering the static noise even in this mode and ive tried to 4 different vx9800 and two different sd cards. Just try and give me some feedback , Greatly appreciated .thanks

Here is the thread from the 8100 forum with the person first bringing up this problem.....

Okay, I was randomly, I thought, having the static problem. Then, I noticed it would ONLY do it @ times where my phone showed didn't have any service.

I called Verizon and spoke with a VERY nice man and he went to all lengths to help me. First, he hadn't heard of the problem. We both thought that it shouldn't do that since it seemed to be a feature of the phone (like the Calculator) which shouldn't be dependent upon a signal.

Then, he asked me to put the phone in "Standalone Mode" (Settings and Tools, System, and turn Standalone Mode on). Standalone Mode doesn't hurt the phone and it is not in the "Hidden Menu". It's just a normal feat...

Hello, I'm the one who posted that thread that Mary424 just posted.

I have the 8100 and am STILL having that problem. I have since then spoken to someone @ LG ans he said that since the MP3s are stored locally on the miniSD card, they should play NO MATTER WHAT. In fact, he's the only person @ LG that seems to know something. The others @ LG have said the thing about the MP3 player being for Music On Demand and that they were surprised the MP3 player even worked (yeah, I think they don't know what's going on). Anyway, the rep that I talked to that actually knew what he was talking about said that he thought maybe my particular phone was defective and I should try another one.

So, I went to the store and did ANOTHER exchange and I'...

yea..i swapped my vx9800 3 times and tried on a reps phone at verizon and still got static even with a new sd card so i know it wasnt the card..i called verizon many times only got get transferred to another rep, then LG people on the phone, then verizon again....thing is though is that when i asked the techs to replicate they got it to work, but then another tech said the phones that they test have different software then ours(and im thinking well that defeats the whole purpose of testing but who am i)..got the guy to put in a ticket..he said at least 4 weeks before anything and since no one else has complained about this as of it, it will take more complaints for them to act..so PLEASE all those please who have VX9800 and have this problem...

ive been fooling around with my phone after being on the phone with a verizon rep, with no help from them to add..and i think i found the problem through trail and error...that the static only occurs in “3d surround sound” equalizer..if on pop, rock, flat, etc .the mp3 plays fine in standby..they and see if it works cause it just did for me..the real test will be if it does later on too..

You know what? I just tried that with mine and it appears that you are correct - it only does it with the 3D surround, however, when listening in other modes, it still sounds a little "fuzzy"! Thanks - and now they need to fix it!

yea, its not as good as it is with signal..i noticed that this morning when i walked onto the subway, it acted like it wanted to go to static and then just started producing lower quality playback...i also suggest putting it in standalone when i no service areas for long durations such as long subway rides, it will save energy on ur battery cause it wont be searching for a singal..glad this helped cause this was driving me crazy for nearly 2 months now and verizon reps have no clue what they are talking about..

Yes, I agree - they don't know what they are talking about - at least most don't.

I'm just wondering how long it'll take to fix this problem. I have an 8100 and they are still working on a "fix" for the volume problem and are thinking it's going to be out around January. Okay, so that's 6 months for a "fix" on a problem that was well known to 8100 users.

I don't think the static problem is going to be as well known for a few reasons:

1) Not everyone has purchased the memory card to save MP3s and without it, they can't listen to MP3s (as of now) so they wouldn't experience the problem.

2) Not everyone who has a memory card uses it for MP3s, some use it for videos and other stuff.

3) Not everyone who has a memory card with ...

i hear u on ur points and im in total agreement. I really dont think they're gonna fix the problem to tell u the truth..i mean a software update maybe available at a later date but i dont think this issue will be addressed..i mean maybe in a year if we're lucky..i guess ill just have to listen to muffled mp3s on the subway..im gonna call again and tell them i know exactly what the problem is so they can address it...

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing - that IF the problem gets fixed that it'll be quite a while, which bites.

I also called LG (as well as the VZW techs @ my local store) and told them of your finding (where they are static only in 3D Surorund and "fuzzy" sounding in other equalizer settings in Standalone/No Service). Of course, I had to tell them from my perspective rather than saying, "Someone posted something about this on a forum..." so that way they'd take me seriously.

I mentioned that one of the times I went in to the store (that other people were posting that they had the same problems...) and the tech said not to pay attention to the forums since they weren't "VZW's forums", in more or less words.

I think verizon fixed this problem by updateing the software for the 9800 at least.

From your phone dial #228

follow voice directions...

doing this will install all the new updates and will put new tower codes in your phone (so ur phone reconizes new towers so u get better service.)

if it doesnt work then oh well worth a shot tho right? i dont have the static problem, and this is the only thing different i did.

Placed my VX9800 in the Standalone Mode and 3D Surround Sound. Then play MP3's and I do not have this static problem.
