1GB Card question

I can only get about 200 songs on my 1GB card in the mp3 format...is this normal. Because I bought the biggest card for this phone figuring I would be able to fit a bunch of songs on it. I am using the sync software that came with the phone through windows media player and they are formating to mp3...can I make them smaller in any way to fit more on the card. And also is there a way to adjust the output because some of my tunes with a lot of bass come through very distorted on playback.

Well I also have to 1 gb card and I have 80 mp3's, 5 family guys, 1 south park, napoleon dynamite, Harold and Kumar go to white castle, and still have a little room to spare so I'm thinking 200 mp3's is a little low.
