I tried the 9800 at the Verizon store tonight. It's gonna launch tomorrow, but the rep let me try it, and I played around with it for about 45 minutes. However, it didn't have its initial activation yet.

Overall quality is very nice. Good "fit and finish!" The keys feel great on both the front keypad and the QWERTY keyboard inside. Very solid and confidence inspiring!

I like that you can also enter extra characters, like Spanish "tilde" and other accents.

The outside screen is so-so. The inside screen is about the same as 8100, but not as nice as 8000.

The camera seems to be about the same as the 8100, but I didn't try it much. Again, it's not as good as the 8000 camera, though.

Using the QWERTY keyboard is very nice and easy....

So, for those with the 8100 (like me), do you see any reason why I should switch to the 9800? I do a lot of texting (I'm used to the T9 Mode, so texting doesn't take me too long). I've been having fluctuating earpiece volume problems with the 8100 and am *considering* the 9800. I just don't know if the $150 difference is justifiable. I'm looking for some other reasons to switch besides the keyboard.

What did you think of the external screen (compared to the 8100 and just overall)?

Thanks!

The external screen seems to be a little small. The inside screen is very nice and slightly more square than rectangle shaped.

The overall quality is quite nice, and the keyboard feel is excellent.

If you are still having earpiece problems, I consider that a major! After all, that is the main function of a phone... to be able to hear.

That's the sole reason I got rid of my 8100... I couldn't hear!!

Now I have the 8000 which is perfect in every way (except a little big). The 8000 screen is better than the 9800, but if I had to choose between the 8100 and the 9800, I think I'd go with the 9800.

I have not tested the sound yet, but I've read others here that say it is amazing.

I'm still in a bit of a quandary myself. I abso...

I forgot to mention the one downside for me... no leather carrying case! Only a pouch is available and I'm not sure if I'd like that. All my previous phones have had leather cases which I attach to my belt clip.

Seems like when the phone rings, it might be a 2-handed operation to get the phone out of the pouch. Even if I learn to do it with one hand, I'm a little paranoid that I might drop the now unprotected phone in my hurry to answer the call!!

So, I think you sacrifice some handling convenience to get the excellent keyboard!!

OK i have had the 9800 for 2 days now. It is a well built phone. the screen on the outside is good but small the inside has a great screen the best better than the 8000 i think. The ear piece is loud and clear no sound problems like the 8100 and the reception i believe better than the 8000 and on par with my vx7000. Its not that big either no antenna makes it easier in the pocket as well. Now the bad there isnt much. One i seem to type faster on the outside number keys than the inside keyboard i just have to get used to the keyboard i guess but there are so many keys i hope i can learn by touch without looking im sure i will over time. The ring volume is really low in my pocket u can barely hear it ring at full blast the reason being the rin...
