New faceplate

Ordered a black, rubberized faceplace from an ebay store in hong kong. It was under $3 although shipping was 2x as much as the item.

I think it looks pretty good:

Mostly I just like that I don't feel as if I'm going to scratch it if I drop it into a pocket with some change or something. Also, the camera door is harder to open, so I haven't opened it accidentally since. The black keypad was "free" add-in, which is good because it looked stupid with the original, silver one.

The same ebay store has shiny faceplates in 8 colors, also.

thats sweet..i wanted the same cover but wasnt sure how the quality was. now as for the buttons is it the same as the oem buttons but in black? also how hard was it to put the cover on..i tried to take off the oem one but seems like i need a tool.

Yeah, the keypad they included is very similar to the OEM, a little more round. The only thing I don't like is that there is no thumb-notch above the d-pad, so pressing up is not as easy as the other 3 directions, but it took only a couple days to get used to that.

Taking the covers off is a little tricky, but there are no special tools required, at least none to buy. If you take off the battery cover, then take the battery out, you'll see 2 tabs holding the antenna cover down. I bent about 5mm of a paperclip at a 90 degree angle and used that to pull back on the tabs enough to slide the cover up. Once you get that part off, you'll see the tabs holding the front faceplate on at the top of the phone. After you get these off, slide a finger...

dthree, the instructions worked perfectly.
If two monkeys like my buddy and I can replace the cover, you know the instructions were good. THanks for the post.

Yes,

The instructions worked great.. and this faceplate looks and feels awesome.

But now I have hardly any volume on the speaker. Has anyone experienced this? Should I go and whittle around those two holes in the faceplate to get more audible sound?

Thanks.

Yes, if you widen the holes on the new cover over the earpiece, the sound should improve. Be careful. I used a paper clip in the ear piece cover holes, and the paper clip slipped and put a little scratch in the black cover.

wow. i was just looking at the face plates
last night and i was thinking... how does
the black rubber feel. and the blacked

light up the same way as the stock ones?
also. how hard is it to change out the
face plates?

If you've ever picked up one of those Nextel motorola phones that are matte black, its like that. It's hard plastic but with a rubber-like texture. Easy to grip.

I mentioned how hard it is to change here:

Just got one of these a few days ago and wanted to ask you some questions...I've noticed that my speaker volume (people talking to me) with the new faceplate is lower than before. Have you noticed the same? Also, the black keypad looks better, but seems a little bit loose...not that bad, but dosen't have the same tactile feel as the original. Not sure what else to expect for $3 worth of plastic, but I definatly like the feel better....

Jan 20, 2006, 7:21 PM
Didn't notice any difference in speaker volume. Maybe you can take the cover off and open up the holes a little with a pin or something.

I do like the feel of the original keypad better, and I find its harder to press "up" on the d-pad, but I didn't like how the original keypad looked with the black case, so I can get used to the feel of the black one.

I figured its not bad for the price i paid. My son got a cover for his V180 at a mall kiosk, paid 3 times as much and its a crappy plastickey thing. I'd be surprised if it lasts a month. So this one's not bad in comparison.

Well, after a week I must say that I have gotten useto the difference in the key pad. Still haven't tried to 'open up' the holes for the speaker, mostly because I've been using my bluetooth earpiece a bunch more. Thanks for finding the ebay store in the first place!

I just got mine and changed out the cover- thanks dthree, for the instructs. on changing it!
I was not happy with the keyboard. The keys look lame and I had a issue with the left top key not working. I replaced it with the stock one and I don't think it looks that bad. =)
I also noticed the speaker was not quite as loud as with the stock one. I reamed the new hole out with the paper clip and I think it is better now.
Thanks again!

I got one of these as well - the rubber black one, but I ordered it with the silver keypad. thanks for instructions dthree!

i also kept the stock keypad. actually, i kept the stock front, so it's silver on the front (thankfully I didn't get one of those pearl white ones) and black rubberized on the back! the case slider is so much better. the info printed on the camera case section seems to be different from OEM, but who cares.

i actually liked this look a lot better than going all black, and pone side is smooth and the other is matte. gives it a bit more class. also with this configurationt he speaker is the original volume!

anyone got a good screen protector? i got some from ebay but they kinda suck - so hard to put on without ...

hey there. well i finally ordered it.
but my phones the 6680 and i got it
from someone in the US so the shipping
wont take forever. so far i am only
going to complain about the keypad.
not the functionality of it but the
look of it. i was wondering for those
who got it from dr. sourcing, what color
is between the buttons? mines chrome which
isnt what i expected. i wanted all blacked
out. if dr. sourcings buttons are blacked
then i will purchase from him.

about the chrome thing, to be clear, theres
this line that goes around the black area thats
chrome. pretty thick and notice able.

but the casing is definitly great.
for the screen protector question from
kevinicus, try axshop. com. i had a spare

one question tho. seems like it takes longer for my keyboard to light up tho? Am I the only one experiencing this?

Unfortunately i didn't like this faceplate.

- the keypad didn't feel nice to me
- the keypad was also pretty dark, which made it hard to see the keys.
- For some reason I had a hard time hearing even with the volume all the way up!
- every time I tried to open the camera sliding door - the entire back cover would come off.

now using the stock faceplate and I like it much better than the China made one.

well we all have our opinions.

i got the rubberized black one, and it's very nice, and is of solid construction.

i only put the back on, and left the front the OEM silver, with the OEM keypad. it's two tone but it looks sharp - people always remark on how great it looks. the new cover never comes open accidentally anymore.

sorry you didn't like it! where did you get yours from?

Mar 13, 2006, 6:52 PM
of course you beg to differ...

- I didn't like the keypad - but you're still using the original one.

- On mine the back was coming off accidentally - since you're using the original front that might means that it clips in more securely.

- with the black front I could barely hear when making calls. Again youโ€™re using the original front, so you will not encounter that problem.

With your setup you will not encounter any of the issues I was having..

I got mine on e-bay (e.g. Dr. Sourcing)

I must agree with Lalbert. I did a full swap off the faceplate(s) and was not happy with the quality of the keypad. Also, the front seems to protrude more than the original, which causes the screen to appear to be recessed further "in" the phone. I also had the issue with call volumes being dramatically lower. So much lower in fact that I thought my speaker had gone out and I was about to send the phone in for repair. I went back to the original cover and normal call volumes returned. While I do like the look of the black/rubber case, it just felt a little too cheap and showed finger prints/dirt much more than the stock cover.

yes you're right, I do have it set up differently.

why don't you try doing what I did? several other users on here did the same thing and are all happy with their results.

the back looks sharp with the black and yes it never comes unclipped - it's truly solid. also, because you have the OEM front and keypad, there's no loss of quality and function.

just IMHO

hey at least we have an awesome phone. my brother got the razr and that is the biggest load of crap ever. looks great like a supermodel but also has the brains of one ๐Ÿ™‚

... "the razr"... hehehehehe... "the brains of one"... I just truely can't stand the OS that Motorola uses on their phones... it drives me crazy when I have to do anything with my sister's phone. If they would ever come out with the windows mobile version, I would give it another consideration.

I love the OS on these Nokia phones, I had the 3600 when I found out that the 6682 had the same OS, I was so there!

Did you have to modify the upper/back piece (e.g. two little top hook pins) to fit on the OE front? The pins on the aftermarket upper/back piece are bigger and it doesnโ€™t fit.

Got the new clear hard case in today. First impressions...it's got a snug fit. It's a two piece front/back arrangement with two small snap in clips on each side. It adds a little bulk to the phone, but not much (hardly any difference in weight). I was previously using a silicone based "rubber" cover and the disadvantage of that was no screen protection and it was difficult to get the phone out of your pants pocket because the silicone caused quite a bit of friction. The new clear hard case is definitely easier to get out of a pocket...nice and slick surface. The built in screen protection is good as well. Access to the camera slide cover is no problem. I actually think it has improved the camera cover so that I don't mistakenly open it. With...

Nice - when you use the phone but itself (e.g. sans Bluetooth ear piece) does it still sounds pretty good? No problem hearing?

There's absolutely no difference in sound quality. The cutout for the earpiece speaker is more than ample.

i was complaing about the same problem
to myself for the past couple weeks.
i really like the look and everything.
the buttons are a bit bearable. if the
material used for the case was a bit
stiffer like OEM then the small hooks
at the bottom wouldnt break so easily.
if the buttons were more sturdier then
they wouldnt be... so flimsy? but oh well.

what i wanted to point out is that for
the volume problem is that if you look
closely to where the sound comes out.
OEM has a plastic layer for the screen.
Aftermarket doesnt. Which means the ear
area is closer to the speaker thats under
there. if there is a way for the Aftermarket
to revise this product and make it better.
it would be great... other then that, i like
the half s...
