32k Sim - No Go

Sideout9257

Got my 32k sim today. First 4 power cycles, logs still there. The 5th time, call logs gone 😲 Oh well. Guess patiently await the firmware upgrade.

On a side note... I got my sim on eBay from N.Y., I am in L.A.. No prob activating it. So appears sims are not market area restricted.

Another observation, with the 32k sim... first time I go into the main menu, goes into the menu right away but takes a few seconds for the icons to display. Exit, back in and icons are there immediately. Has happened every power cycle so far. But again, JUST the first time into the menu. Kind of strange.

Joe,
I have always had the delay when going to the menu the first time after a restart. Even had it with my 6620, so I'm used to that. As of yet, I have yet to lose my call logs since I switched over to the 32k. Nor did I get the copy sim contacts message. Did you? You only mentioned that your logs were lost. I think aprout has had a 32k from day one and he has never had either of the 2 minor issues we have shared. By all accounts, the 32k is market related and perhaps you got lucky. How does yours compare to mine - my number on my card is 62095 32k GT. What is yours?

Icyhot,

Talked with a mgr at a Cingular store today, he said, the problem is with the phone, nokia is aware of it, as well as Cingular, and they are going to stop distribution of the phone, until they get a fix for it.......

He said he was in an "all mgr's meeting this week" and that was discussed. So if the availability starts declining on this phone, you'll know why....

vpu2......OUT!!!!

I disagree. How novel of someone at Cingular to point the finger at Nokia. I firmly stand by my theory that it is a 64k sim card glitch that is being caused by Cingular's FW. As I said, Aprout has had a 32k from day one. He has no issues. Upon me getting and activating a 32k, I have had no issues, whereas I did have them with a 64k. Nokia may come out with a FW upgrade that fixes the problem caused by the 64k, but the problem lies with Cingular. Get an unbranded 6682 with only Nokia's FW and a 64k sim, and the glitches are non existant.

Those are the facts, and they are undisputed.

I have had 32K Sim on mine since day 1 (9/20) also. Absolutely no problems. I wasn't even aware of the problems until I started reading about them here & HoFo. Mine is Cingular branded, locked, & bought at the local corporate store.

Icy, I'm not sure if you remember, but I did state that my wife also has a 6682 w/32k.

She has no log/sim copy issues, but a boatload of others.

I think her's is the occasional bad apple and will swap it out.

I would not even list the issues, because they seem to be isolated, esp with the trouble free prefomance mine has exhibited.

Help me out here, because I'm a bit of a novice. I can buy a 6682 from nokia or whereever, pop the sim from my samsung x427(~3 years old) into the 6682 and start making calls, right?

If I buy a 64k sim, and put that into an cingular branded phone, what do I need to do to activate it?

If I get an unbranded phone and buy a new sim, what do I do to activate it and start making calls?

Yes just take the 32k out of your Sammy, pop it in the 6682 and it will work fine. You never have to call Cingular and have them activate anything. Its the beauty of GSM.

Why would you want to do that? You already have a sim.

I guess I wouldn't, unless I had some problems due to my sim being 3+ years old. I'm mainly asking for informational purposes. Here's a re-phrasing:

Does the sim ever need to be "upgraded"? What's the difference between the 64k and 32k sim, other than the obvious, of course....

Cingular will send you a 64k if you buy the phone from them and should anything ever happen to your 32k you can call and they will activate the 64k.

I see. Thanks, mate. There's one more question I have, sorta unrelated. Letstalk.com was selling the phone for $199 with a contract extension. Then upon checkout they mentioned cingular would charge me the $36 new activation fee, which they clearly won't because I've had service with them for years. What happens if I buy the phone from letstalk for $200, and it turns out they meant new activation not contract extension. Will they turn around and charge me the phone only price, which is higher than I would pay if I got the phone as an upgrade through cingular(assuming the re-list it)? I've not found a good explanation of all the options for buying a new phone when you have service already.

So I've answered my own question, and I will write what I learned here in case others are looking for the same information. It turns out that if you're in the last two months of your contract, you can get the activated price, upon extending your contract for two years. letstalk also tells me that the phone is locked to cingular, and that it may or may not have the cingular theme, but is not a cingular branded phone. I'm not sure what to make of that...I'm assuming I'm getting the same thing as if I were to order directly from nokia, which according to the comments in this thread, is a good thing. In order to be covered under my current cingular insurance, all I would have to do is call cingular and update them on my imei number, but if I l...

Icyhot,

I tend to agree with you, however, I know an associate who works at a corporate store, has a 64k sim, since he got the phone, and has NO issues, like we have, have chkd his firmware revision, its the same as ours, even pwr cycled his phone several times myself, no call log issues or the asking to save contacts to sim.......NONE!!!!!!

I have had 4 phones, all have an issue, have read the posts on here, and would not dispute that it seems to be something with the Cingular Firmware, HOWEVER............when I spoke with nokia concerning this issue, they stated "NOKIA will have to fix the firmware issues"...... Don't shoot the messenger, eh?

Just letting you know what I have heard.... The mgr stated, they are not getting anymor...

I apologize if it sounded as if I was shooting the messenger lol. Ok, here's my question. The guy that had the 64k and had no issues, is it possible he didn't have Cingular's software? I know any phone that doesn't have Cingular's software and uses a 64k is issue free. That's why I asked.

Icyhot,

It's a Cingular phone, bought from one of the first batches to hit the stores. As I stated, his firmware is the same as the ones reportedly having the issues. How/why his isn't having and issue, I thought to be due to his 64k sim, it was different than the one I was using. I had him update mine to the newer 64k sim, but am still having the issue. I then visited another friend who works at Cingular stores, he's a manager, and asked if they've been experiencing the problems, he states "Everyone in the store that has a 6682 is having the same issue", he said it was brought up in a mgr's meeting, that the distribution was being halted, supposedly, until they get it fixed.

I never had the lag with this phone with the 64k or on my 6620. I'm not talking about the slowness like if you try to go into the menu immenidately after power up. That I have experienced on both phones... like the OS is still loading up... similar to a pc. I waited like 10 seconds, go into the menu and get just the theme background with 3 or 4 seconds later, icons appearing. Every time after that intial entry, boom, icons are there immediately upon entering the menu.

I have not received the copy sim message since being on the 32k. One weird thing... I was calling myself from my home phone... While it was ringing, my cel... it dispalyed "2 missed calls". After I hung up my home phone, it displayed "3 missed" calls. It should have ...
