So does this device actually impose a limit of 100 songs? or is it because the max card you can use is 512? thats about 5 megs per song, but what if i put 100 really small songs on there? will it stop me from adding anymore than 100?

Yes... As with the same issue with the ROKR...... It's ment to be an alternative to carrying an iPod. If it were to hold more, the phone would be more expensive and Apple is not going to let a product be release that would hurt their sales... 100 songs on a PHONE should be plenty. It's a novelty...

From my understanding, it's a memory limitation so if you may be able to put 150 small songs on there or say only 50 larger songs. Thats the way it's always been explained to me by my regional sales reps.

NO.... 👿 There is NOT a 100 song limit. There is a capability of 512MB, which can hold 512 1MB files or 1 512MB file and anything in between. The ROKR has the same capability. The 100 Song limit you speak of is only in regards to iTUNES that you download from Apple directly. Any normal MP3 will go to the 512MB capacity no matter what the size. 😁
