**Stereo adapter and headphones**

I have been looking through the forums for a few days trying to figure out how best to get the music coming out of the phone to go into my car stereo or headphones. I bought a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter at Radio Shack a few weeks back, but of course it only played mono through my car stereo's aux-in port. Sometimes if I jiggled it just right I could get it to go stereo, but the first bump I hit in the car it went back to mono.

Tonight, I was at Wal-Mart of all places and I found a solution. I was in the cell phone accessories area and I found a Plantronics "Mobile Music" headphone set made just for the cellular industry. It was just under $15, and the best part is that it is 2 pieces-the headphones and adapter are separate. The result is...

Thanks, I had the radio shack thing too, it just doesn't fit in the phone right. I also got a cheap FM modulator from best buy $20 ( in the portable cd player section) it worked but there was some static. I'd rather run a little wire and have good sound. Good old Wally pulls through again.

so the adapter provides crystal clear sound in your car as if you were plugging an iPod into your stereo?

Also, I tried out the adapter that comes with the iTunes ROKR phone and that produces awful almost "streaming" sound.

Can you post the exact name of the product and maybe a link to where you can buy it online.

Thanks in advance.

Does this mean you can connect it to your home stero as well? Any recommendations on a good MP3 site?

Ok, I'm back. I left the packaging at home, but this thing is the Plantronics M40-S. The S stands for stereo, since Plantronics apparently makes the M40 in mono as well. Make sure you get one with the S or you'll have only one earbud. The one I bought last night at Wal-Mart (M40-S) has 2 earbuds, a MIC on the line, and 2 separate connectors - one is just 3.5mm to 3.5mm and the other is 3.5mm to 2.5mm (this is the one we want). I have seen this device online in a few places, but most don't have a very thorough description of it (to include the Plantronics site).

As far as quality, I can tell you I am happy with it. Like I said, the actual 3.5mm to 2.5mm connector is a separate piece, so I was able to use it to connect my phone to my ...

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the adapter makes this plantronics headset mono. sure, the sound is coming out of both earbuds on the headset, but the signal is mono, not stereo. definately NOT recommended. ☹️

Also, as far as connecting it to a home system, I'd say any speakers than can accommodate a 3.5mm plug should be able to play this. The key was getting the 2.5mm port on our phones to connect to 3.5mm equipment, like the Aux IN port on a car stereo or a pair of headphones. This thing accomplishes that.

By the way, I'd post a link but everything I have found online shows a single earbud, and none of them say much about the product itself. I think they are all advertising the Mono version, but believe me, I have the stereo version with 2 earbuds.

So that adapter would then work with any set of headphones, seeing as it's separate? I would just like to use headphones that I already own, which I like. Plus I hate earbuds. So I'd be buying it for the adapter alone.

As for connecting to a home stereo, chances are you have stereo RCA in on the receiver, so you just go from 2.5 to 3.5mm (1/8 inch) adapter to RCA stereo.

Yeah you can use the adapter part with any standard headphone (I confirmed it here).

I know someone else posted that the ROKR adapter did not work well, however I had already ordered it, and I tried it today. Worked poorly, in fact, I had to pull it out a mm or 2 to get it to play decently, however it was still bad, and having it partly seated was awkward. Back to Cingular it goes. I'll try the one that Plantronics makes.

I've posted this response elsewhere, but I'll keep repeating it due to all the detractors. There are MANY people on both here and HoFo slamming this Plantronics adapter as "not true stereo" and saying the thing basically sucks. I wholeheartedly disagree. I've had it almost a week now, and NO COMPLAINTS. If you're expectations are to be able to hear the sound in both ears, and crystal clear, you'll be happy with this set. Also, the adapter for the car stereo works perfect. I think the detractors are the same folks who buy every new phone as it comes out. Expectations are a little high to say the least.

If your just looking for a great stereo headset to liten to your MP3's on your phone, nothing beats the Jabra stereo headset that Verizon sells!

I also have the Jabra headset, and nothing sounds even close to the quality of that headset. I tried the ROKR headset and it was terrible, as was the adapter by itself (with other headphones and with my car setup). I also have the Plantronics set, and while the headphones have no bass at all, the adapter does work well enough (very little volume comes out, which I'm sure is an issue with the non-amplified phone, not the adapter), although the fit is not so great, and it occasionally slips out. Not the best call, however it works ok. I'm sure there will be accessories out for just this phone that will solve all these issue, however for now I'd say use the Jabra headhones for personal use and the Plantronics adapter for hooking the phone up to...

I just bought these today from Walmart and they are pretty nice. The audio quality is decent, my only complaint is that the phone volume doesn't get loud enough for me. But I like to listen to music loud, so it may be suitable for others.

As for hooking it up and plugging it into an external device, I wouldn't plan on doing it with this phone. As I said it doesn't get loud enough. I tried it on the AUX port on my car cdplayer, and I could BARELY hear it play through the speakers.

OH! and I must say great find docholliday, thank you very much I have been looking for a pair like this and just about everyone gives me a puzzled look when I asked about stereo headphones w/a microphone for a cell phone. 😛

No problem. I really wanted to find such a thing and was glad I came across it last night.

Also, I have found that I DO have to turn my car stereo quite a bit louder than I would otherwise but once I do it plays at a pretty loud volume.

One last thing...the Plantronic's site had an "amplifier" for these types of things available. It apparently powers the audio as it comes out of the phone. Since the only reason sound comes louder out of boomboxes and car stereos is because they are POWERED and usually have amps, this would make the difference.
