NO MP3 PLAYER - VZW CONFIRMED

"URGENT! LG 8100 DOES NOT have an MP3 player."

This was released on verizon's infocenter for employee's.
That's all it said. Nothing about future firmware upgrades or anything - so it sounds as if they left the 8100 crippled for good.

I'm guessing your a Verizon employee.. if not how did you find this information out

8100 users don't be too upset about this because theres a high chance of someone unlocking this feature.. if the phone originally had an mp3 player and verizon crippled it.. there has to be a way to unlock it or bypass it

pull your head out of the sandbox brah, verizon cripples everything they can. you guys wouldn't even know what to do with a fully enable phone.

Yeah but there have been rumors that they are goin to enable it when this Mobile Music thing comes out..watever its called.. so that would mean that theyy would make money off of the mp3 player..

i know verizon cripples a lot of features.. but its their way of trying to stop everyone from getting free stuff.. you would do the same if you were running a business.. anyways i was just saying that people in these forums will probably find a way to unlock the mp3 player so we can use it anyways...then the problem will be solved

MOD is a ripoff. 3 bucks for one song and dont have the ability to transfer to PC much less your next cell phone. Major ripoff if you ask me.

No i completely agree with you that it is a rip off.. even get it now is a rip off

but say they do enable the mp3 player for this Music On Demand that would make it easier for people to find a way to put our own music on there (free music) and even if they dont as i repeated many times someone is goin to find a way to enable this feature no matter what

lol dont think im for their services in any way.. im a consumer like all of you and completely understand that the get it now and vcast and music on demand its all a rip off 😉

I highly doubt that music on demand will enable a mp3 player, because the MOD files will not be in mp3 format. Whatever format they are in will be what it will play.

Ok thats not to say that it will be a multimedia player where you can play the files from MOD and mp3..

think about it regular MP3 players usually support more than MP3 files.. they usually can play wma and all those other types so that would be saying that its not an mp3 player just because it plays other files too..

do you understand where im coming from?

Sure i do, but if they crippled mp3 out of the box, and they obviously like people to pay for their services, I dont really see them adding the feature. There is no evidence to go either way, except what I posted today.

If you guys read through the forums, you will find a way to use the video player as an mp3 player. Yes, you do have to convert the file, but so what...the files sound great, don't get larger, and you have pause, play, forward, and reverse control. All from the sd card. The only catch so far is you can't use the outside buttons on the phone.

How do you convert the file? This is what I've done so far, I have downloaded a song on the minidisc. Changed the flie name from .mp3 to .qcp .mid and .midi and then transferred them to my sounds. I see the songs there, but when I press play, nothing happens. Is the file too large for my_sounds? I also put the songs in the correct folder as well. Thanks, J

on your pc, open up the folder that the files are in...go to folder options, view, and then uncheck the box that says "hide extensions for known file types. Now convert the file to a .3g2 file. Make sure the file name is short....such as gong.3g2 By unchecking that box in the folder options, the files really become the files you name them...Next, put the .3g2 file in the my flix folder on your sd card. now reboot the phone, go to get it now, my flix, and the song will appear in there...you now can you the movie player as an mp3 player!! Hope this helps.

Thanks, I've tried this, but it still will not play, I can see the file, but it jsut sits ther. I appreciate your help though. Are you able to get it to play? Is this only for smaller files or will it paly a whole song? The reason I say this is because I'm thinking that since the legth of video is 15 seconds, if I download a song longer than that, would it not play?

I have played songs over 8 minutes. this won't work unless you do the uncheck box thing in your folders on the pc first. Doing that, actually changes the file to a 3g2.

I wouldn't call it free stuff, especially if you paid full price for the phone. I heard that Verizon is coming out with Music On Demand, so wouldn't that tell you there is an MP3 player in the cell or at the least a music palyer. I have one of those ringtones that plays the actual song and it sounds pretty good to me, so it can play music.

All this talk about the mp3 player in the 8100 is making me gratefull I have the 8000. Not clear on this, but if the 8100 can read mp3 from the card, than there must be a way to insert a file to redirect its search to any file on the phone and make use of that 528 Megs.

Yes, we KNOW it does not have a WORKING mp3 player - YET. Search the postings for the response I received from VZW last week. I received a written response, and a follow-up for clarification, stating that VZW was working on a fix to enable the mp3 player.

We, more than one of us on here, I believe, have confirmed with LG that the phone was intended to have a working player, VZW disabled it when they released the phone. Apparently this was done because of operating problems. We have also confirmed, received in writing from VZW, that they are working on a fix.

i concur, i have posted here a few times about the upcoming update in a few weeks, i did not get it on a handy memo but from lg/verizon higher ups. What i am not sure is what all it will fix, and if fixing the mp3 problem means they will enable the media player on the front or just allow the format so it will be ready for mod? still hazey about the details, but something is coming shortly

yeah, same here, not sure what all is going to be in the update, but i know their main issue they were going to address was the mp3 player!!!!!!!!! I hope they get it working, if not i will stick to my personal mp3 player and bitpim for ringtones.

Just to further inform all of you Verizon MAY ((fix)) the Mp3 Player ability, but be aware even if they do this will not fix your ringtone issues. It will only allow you to play Mp3 files through your front screen (Yippie).. Verizon does not want people to have the ability to transfer Mp3's into their phones as ringtones (Thus rendering their Music on Demand Plan useless).

I see no point in arguing about the fact that this phone doesn't play Mp3s. The ((fix)) i wrote about earlier is not really a fix at all.. !!!think about it, this phones software can play Mp3's right now!!! It's just modified to not recognize the file extension (*.Mp3) It has been tested already just change the files Extension and there you have it, it plays. All they ...

the reason they crippled it is cuz they want people to pay like 3 bucks for 1 song on the Musid on Demand service...E815 has MP3 player

Use some logic here. If they crippled the mp3 player on the 8100 because they wanted to wait until M.O.D. was available, to be able to charge for songs, why would they leave the mp3 player on the 815 intact? It makes no sense at all to have it working on one phone, yet not another. As indicated by VZW, it seems very logical to me, that there was some kind of problem that caused them to disable the player on the 8100.

I am a little confused, i didn't think the 815 had an mp3 player either, i know it will play mp3 format but can you fast forward/skip a song/ play it with the phone closed as a playlist? I also thought it wasn't set up to ever work with music on demand? I am just curious becasue all these people keep saying the moto can but if all they are talking about is putting a song on their phone, opening the phone and finding it and playing one at a time or set it as a ringer than big woop, i can do that on the 8100 to, it might be a little more of a pain to get them on there but the speakers are crystel clear?

I have both phones...very happily. They are both great, but I still have to get the MP3 on the 8100 going. As for the 815 interface, you can start a playlist...close the phone...and just open the phone when you want to FF/REW or change tracks, it will play continuously while opening and closing, and the 4-way D-pad automatically reidentifies itself to control the MP3s when re-opened.
I do however wish it had the better speakers that the 8100 has. I'm working with BITPIM to find which folder is best for sound files. In looking into the hidden media player it lists a "mmc1/mf" folder or something like that, if I find this folder and add songs to the MiniSD will they play well through that?
Hopefully I've answered a Q or 2 and someone can ans...

I've tried many times to get the hidden media player (accessed through the '0' menu) to play files off the card, but it just doesn't find them.

That's because it only looks in one folder for files: brew/16452/mf

What this means: this folder was intended to be used only for files downloaded through Brew, which is the technology behind GET IT NOW and VCAST.

And there doesn't seem to be a way to change that. So if this media player is the one that will (may) be ultimately 'unlocked' by Verizon when they launch MOD, and if this player is the one which will (may) be available through the outside buttons, you can forget about playing music from the card ! ☚ī¸

BUT if they do activate the MP3 player on the outside, you should be ...

Ok, i just traded my audiovox 8940 for this 8100 because of the mp3 player, which the people from verizon had told me worked. The one thing that may help that I noticed with both phones is that they both use the same media player, well that is the mp3 player on my 8940 is the same as the flix player on the 8100. I am going to work with it a bit and see if it is possible to unlock and or allow the mp3 format to work on the 8100. If anyone else has any ideas please let me know.
