Don't buy this phone!!

Attention everyone,
If you are currently planning on purchasing the VX8100, I must strongly advise against it. This phone is a symbol of Verizon's corporate greed. They have purposefully disabled the luxuries of the previous LG models such as voice memo ringtones and have falsely advertised fully functional MP3 players and data card access in order to get people to purchase this phone. Not only is the phone incapable of using voice memos or MP3s as ringtones, it is incapable of playing anything but MIDI files from the SD card. The only way to play MP3s or add on any ringtones are to purchase them from the Get It Now network. This was a blatant attempt at trying to get more money from us with these hidden costs. I spoke to a Verizon sa...

Way too big of a phone? The e815 is a nice phone also but it is much bigger than the 8100.

DON'T RETURN IT!!! it IS possible to use your own ringtones. No, it is not supported natively through the phone and through pix msg. YOU CAN use your data cable (i have one that i used on my 6000, filed down to work on my 7000, and works on the 8100) and follow the VERY EASY hofo thread and BOOM you've got ringtones. Now if you are too retarted to do this then sure, go return the 8100 and loose out.

Please explain how you filed it down. Did u just sand down the little metal strip? I can get the cable to fit inside the phone with my 4500 cable without sanding it, but its not detecting. Can you link me to the drivers i need as well? thanks a lot in advance.

Dude,
it's a cell PHONE... not an MP3 player. Who cares what VZW cripples, the phone offers plenty of other features that make it a worthwhile CELL PHONE. If you want an MP3 player, go get an IPOD.

And you can add your own ringtones using bitpim for free.

Do your research - most of your complaints have already been figured out.

What is bitpim and how do you go about using it? I agree with you - its a phone and it does have many cool features and am very happy with it. Thanks - 🤣

Simply do a google seach on BitPim to get the software and head to RadioShack or do a search on-line for a USB Data cable for the VX-8100. Usually about 20 bills. BitPim allows you to upload\download ringers, calendar, address book, etc. Ringers can be created yourself and can be loaded as mp3's. About 20-30 secs is good length for a ringtone, use a free mp3 tool like Audacity to truncate the mp3, merge it from stereo to mono and make it 64bit for size and sound, has worked on every LG phone I've ever owned.

Exactly. Well said. For what the phone offers, it's already a leap above what 'normal' phones offer.

I agree with henryhank...just because you don't like something is not a reason to tell everyone what they should do. I am planning on getting this phone and mostly because of the bluetooth feature (I could care less about the mp3 feature...as was said before, this is a "phone").

Since you obviously looked at the features of this phone and came to your own conclusion, how about letting everyone else do the same.

Dude, buy an iPod shuffle or something. They are only $99. Some people need to grow up. If you disagree with something Verizon does then switch to another carrier. Don't whine like a baby and throw a tantrum. People want to hear facts about phones and legitimate opinions to help them make informed decisions. not some immature, overly melodramatic rant.

I think the main reason why ppl wanna play mp3s is the ability to use them as a ringer. Thats the most important thing. Again, someone please explain what bitpim is and how to use mp3s as ringers! 😎

Some of us want to play mp3's cos we dont have the luxury of being able to carry extra electronics in our daily lives. I already carry 2 phones to keep 2 different businesses separated. An all in one mp3 plyr, email, txt, camera and phone in a compact size would make sense. No?

However, the original poster does make a good point. If you dont have the mp3 player and aint interested in bluetooth then why not get the 8000? Apart from the size diffs are there any other benefits of the 8100 over the 8000?

Personally, I would feel more comfortable buying the 8100 if I knew what, when and where vzw was planning for the mp3 player and the sd card. If it was just a 'phone' I wanted then there are a bucket load of other options out there.

Thank you, Weesoo. Finally SOMEONE sees my point.

The fact of the matter is, Verizon downgraded multiple features, added bluetooth in and tried to pass it off as a better phone. Sure, you can go with bitpim or other data modification programs, but think about the fact that everytime you have to take the extra steps to get your ringtone, it's because Verizon just wanted to make a couple MORE dollars off of you in addition to the price of the phone and your monthly fees.

As far as what they're planning for the MP3 player, basically you just get to pay to download them. You can load MP3s onto the SD from your PC (I tried), but it won't register on the phone. The SD, in essence, is pretty useless. It adds some storage space, but a...

I've been making my own ringtones for about 3 years now and using data cables to load, has always worked using mp3's which I personally modified to handle the crappy phone speaker. This phone wil be no different, only with increased capacity and stero speakers (still likely garbage) I won't have to truncate the mp3 so much. If you want this phone so badly full blown, buy it on-line and take it to Verizon to be activated. Part of the reason phone from vendors are so cheap is by offering you the phone for nothing they make that up on the back-end by modifying it to turn a buck post-purchase. It's America man. Most of these phones cost a pretty penny clean. I haven't seen the load on this phone yet to see what may have been done to lock the...

Some people don't want to HACK their phones or go through numerous steps or learn a different language practically just to use a feature that a phone is supposed to have! Get the e815, you can use the mp3 player like it's supposed to be used!

Sorry to ruin your "Verizon hate thread" but I have yet to see Verizon advertise ANYTHING ANYWHERE about this phone so far. So all the info you have didn't come from Verizon, so how are they falsely advertising anything?

And you think we won't find a work around for these problems the same way we did with the 710 and the 8000????? Personally I think Motorolas reliability sucks. I am tired of swapping phones every 2 weeks for problems. I have been through 6 v710's. I am going back to LG with whom I have had no problems at all.

Press release just came out for the 8100, under specs mentions MiniSD External Memory Port to Store Pictures, Videos. No mention of music for use as mp3 type device. However, on LG's website they give kind of mixed info regarding the SD slot. it is never fully mentioned device functionality as a music player. Keep an eye out on sites for possible mods to correct this, possible has been deactivated by VZW, all part of why they feel they can sell you a super expensive phone really cheap. Again, if you want full features by the phone online and take it to be activated.

Forgive me for being naive, but is the phone just not capable of playing mp3's or using them as ringtones, or did Verizon just disable that feature? I would think the former would be the case since the e815 is capable of playing and using mp3s.

At the very top of the spec sheet, it clearly states (and is highlighted in yellow) "All specifications are preliminary and subject to change until official launch."

So Verizon took away the MP3 player. Big deal. You can still make calls, which is what a "cell phone" is for.
