Just how fast is it?
Hey all,
I have a question...two actually. One, just how fast is this phone with EDGE? Compared to a computer with internet access, it is as fast as dial up or faster? Is it as fast as a cable modem or a lot slower?
Finally, I realy really really want this phone...the features it has would be a great help in my profession...what is the most inexpensive you guys have seen the phone? I am currently a Cingular customer and am eligible for upgrade if that helps. Thanks a lot, and be blessed!

Ok it is 10 times fater than DIAL UP- you can trust me on that one. This phone is edge capable it will let you download pages close to DSL SPEEDS 120-180 KBPS. You can't compare the cable internet speeds for the simple reason that cable can reach up to 480 Kbps per sec. Cingular is also lauching UMTS NETWORK THE UPGRADED VERSION OF EDGE WHICH anables you to download data as fast as 412 Kbps

Really? That fast, eh? That is nice...may I ask who much you purchased your treo for? My budget won't allow me to drop 400 bucks off like that...I'll be able to once i get my degree 😁
Also, will UMTS be at an extra cost? Or is it replacing EDGE?

the usmts net work it not available on every market as we speak this is one of the reson why cingular bought ATT. Attws pretty much has their data side down packed real good. You c eventually umts its going to be an standard. The edge version just became available for almost all of the markets. it will be an standa in a few mor months. UMTS IS THE UPGRATE OF EDGE. The markets that are actually using are ginnie pigs only testing at this point. Eventually the price will be a little bit more expensive. But with time it will drop down, also you have to look at the type of data plan you will get and what you'll need it for. Ah, I see. Ok, thanks for the help. I appreciate you...I may end up getting the Blackberry 7100g. It may not be worth it, even if it is less expensive. Having to pay for a BB media plan sucks...durn Cingular. They are taking over the world...

I think your a little confused. Edge isnt measured in KBps its Kbps (KBPS= KiloBytes kbps= Kilobits). So in saying its as fast as DSL speeds 120-180 KBps is not true... its really 12-18 KBps. Just move the decimal over one spot. And UMTS would be 41.2 KBps. I know its confusing.

I have the unit connected to my notebook functioning as an EDGE modem and it is very slow you will get what I would call very fast dial up speeds. My edge card the goes directly into the PC is much faster, what I would call slow DSL speeds.
