AudiovoxXV6600 or Treo 600/650?

It seems like everyone is loving this phone! As you Verizon customers know, Verizon does not have the Treo 650 yet and they don't know when or if they will get it. So I'm up for renewal and I'm wondering if I should just get the Treo 600 (the price is reduced significantly now) or go ahead and get this Audiovox. If I drop the $$ for this thing, I want to be tickled pink!

1. Is the phone really bad? (I really do need a good phone)

2. How is the Windows OS compared to the Palm OS? I have Groupwise at work, not Outlook. Will the Audiovox work?

3. Have most of the kinks been worked out? (Bluetooth, ringer volume). Or will I have to go to all of these websites to get everything working right?

I'm having the exact same dilemma and the exact same questions! If someone can help answer them, it would be much appreciated! (Newtechie, if you've made your decision or have any more thoughts or info about it, I'd love to hear from you too!)

I'm also wondering if this Audiovox phone/PDA is compatible with Mac computers... I need something that is.

Thanks to anyone that can offer some input! (I NEED to get a new phone and PDA to replace my ANCIENT Motorola StarTac and Handspring/Visor PDA- they're laughable!!!)

We have blackberries, Treos 600 & 650 and the Audiovox 6600 both sprint and verizon. I have played with them all and to be honest with you there is no comparison.

Blackberries are ok but thats about it

If you are Really Really in love with the palm os then get the treo 650 forget the 600!

I have used a palm IIIx for years and then a Hitachi G1000 Stop laughing anyway I had to choose between one of the above. I picked the Sprint PPC-6600 and I am very happy with it its an awesome all round phone and PDA. The cameras even pretty decent. Ok its not 4 megapixel buts its pretty good 😲) For all those people that say you never will use the camera. I have used my camera loads of times already. How many times have you been in a posti...

Cromi, when you say "We have blackberries, Treos 600 & 650 and the Audiovox 6600 both sprint and verizon," who's 'we'? As far as I know, Verizon doesn't have the Treo 650 yet (and don't know if they will even get it). I would love it and it would solve all my problems if they did, but I don't think they do... unless you have some secret connection or something! πŸ˜‰ And do you know if the Audiovox 6600 is compatible with Mac computers?

Thanks!

Nikki,

The company that I work for has been evaluating all the units. You are correct the 650T is only available from sprint and I don't think verizon have any plans to release it. Not sure why as its a better unit. better screen blue tooth etc. etc. As far the 6600 with camera we have again only seen a sprint unit. We have played with the 6600 verizon non camera version. Not sure about Mac not used one for a while. I would check handango to see if there is a third party piece of software or contact apple.

I appreciate the responses. I saw a review saying the 6600 worked well on a MAC. I have a MAC as well, so that was nice to know. I also have Groupwise at work so that would be nice to be able to work with as well.

I am sure the Treo650 will eventually be available from Verizon. But not sure I want to wait a few more months to find out.

I definately don't want Sprint, because their coverage in my city is spotty.

Cromi, since you seem to be the only one that has the view of both devices, can you be more specific about the pros and cons between the two. I'm a prety die hard Palm OS guy, but the reviews on this site of the 650 have not been flattering. Which surprises me, because I have several in my office that swear by the...

Okay I tried the Treo 600 (Verizon) and it was okay, that's it. The buttons were just too hard to really use. I found it very difficult to dial a number, especially while driving. Now admittedly, if I had programmed all of my numbers I could have just used the thumbwheel, that would have made it a lot easier (since I was trying it out I didn't program my numbers). But, even putting in appointments and stuff was laborious with those itty-bitty buttons. I have small fingers, but my nails kept making me mess up on the keyboard. I felt like throwing it against the wall sometimes. My friend says that she just updates her calendar on the computer because the keys are so small. Plus it was too big for my purse! 😁 (That's just a girl thing...

I agree with cromi regarding the Treo 650. I wouldn't even consider getting the 600. But as for comparing the 650 to the xv6600, there is no fair comparison. The xv6600 is a much better PDA, even if you are a PalmOS fan. And as for the camera version, Verizon does have both options on their website. Another thing to consider--if you plan on being online frequently, the xv6600 supports EV-DO technology (broadband speed), which Verizon uses with VCast. The difference in speeds is 400-700 Kbps with VCast vs. 60-80 Kbps without. I did a side-by-side comparison with the two phones and the XV6600 had surfed 6 different web pages before the Treo had even finished loading the first webpage. Just something to consider.

cstep, how is the phone on the xv6600? I have read several complaints that the phone wasn't that great. I still might consider getting the xv6600, as I am now seeing that I need to have my calendar with me. Also, I still need to know if it will work well Groupwise e-mail, because that's what I have at work. So, if anyone knows, let me know. I'm glad to hear that the internet is better on the 6600, it was really hard to read stuff on the Treo 600 and, I agree that it was slow at times.

I think the phone is great. Really no different from using any other cell phone. Before I bought it I had also heard that the phone wasn't all that good but its meant to be a PDA first and phone second. True, but I have to say I haven't found any reason to dislike the phone. I will say there are a few features that are not obvious, and since the phone is so new not many cust service reps know how to do everything. For example, speakerphone is activated by pressing the green send button and holding it down for approx 2 seconds until the speaker comes on. Had to find that in the user manual. Other than those types of issues, its great. If the ringer volume is too low, just download a louder one. Hope this helps.

I just bought the Audiovox 6600 today - I lost my Kyocera in a cab last night in nyc. So, i don't have much of a review just yet (forthcoming). Here's what i can see so far: Ring tones ARE low... The phone came with a cam AND can shoot video. Great handwriting recognition (my kyocera was palm based and it was terrible). the size of the phone is goonish, but manageable. Battery life seems ok so far.

I'll have a better report soon, I've yet to really tap into its functionality.

. I had to finally give up on my second 6600 for poor battery life ..
My new 650 is ordered and set for delivery with in 3 to 5 days I did all the battery conservation techniques that I could find and still lost data by 2 pm .. I loved the functionality of the 6600. I hear of other people who charge and change batteries as much as three times a day . cant use it no mater how cool it is if it don’t run…I watched the battery level drop from 83 percent to 76 percent just sitting on my desk in about 35 min while talking to Vzw service. Has any one else had any better experience? Ps I think I am only a moderate user – 3000 phone min per months mostly on my I610 – 3 web pages per day and twice a day email check -the calendar three times a day. ...
