Is GPS Possible without external Antenna?
DD3Dec 31, 2004, 11:33 PM
I have tried to find a Mapping software that will work with the internal GPS locator. I have a 1GB sd card to store all of my info on and would like to also run a GPS mapping software without having to removeit and replace with a seperate GPS Reciever. Someone Please Help. I know it is out there and available just cannot find it. THANX

I don't think so. As far as I know most of the cell phones that comes DOES not have a GPS reciever that you can use for any mapping software. It is only have a GPS locator that 911 Services use so they can find you but not an actual reciever that you use. If you want to use GPS with maping software you obsolutely have to use the external GPS receiver, which may or may not work.

I haven't tried this yet, but I was going to get the mapping software with a blue tooth receiver(like Copilot). My understanding is that this would allow me to have an SD card in the slot and still perform the GPS functions. What do you think?

I don't have much experience with GPS software, but maybe if you turn on the Location Based Service (LBS) on the phone it will work properly. Every Verizon phone I've seen so far comes default with LBS off. This means that positional info is only transmitted on a 911 call. If you turn LBS on then I think you transmit all of the time. LBS status is indicated by the "crosshairs" icon on your phone's display. If there are no ")))" wireless signals next to the crosshairs then LBS is off.

I have used Pharos/Ostia GPS succesfully with an i700. I just ordered the Bluetooth adapter for the GPS receiver for my 6600. I'll let you know how it works. The Pharos GPS receiever is flat and only 2" X 2". If the Bluetooth works ok I think it will be a great solution
