What is *228?

I've seen this term thrown around and think it's an update of some sort. What exactly does it do and how do you use it? I tries it and it said "activation in progress" I got scared and disconnected. Can anyone explain this to me?

Don't be scared 🙂 *228 is used to initially activiate a new phone and also to update your roaming capabilities in the area you use your phone mostly. Since new cell phone towers are put up every now and then, and new versions of software are made available time to time, it's good to update your phone this way onced a month. To do so, dial *228 then press send. DO NOT press 1...this is only used to activiate a new phone. When prompted, press 2 to update roaming capabilities. You'll hear music for about 20 seconds while your phone updates itself, and then will receive verbal confirmation that your phone has been successfully updated. In some cases the phone will restart itself. If you phone doesn't restart itself, power off your phone...
