is it normal for the ringer to be loud when closed but if the phone rings when the phone is open you can barely hear it.

Yes, Most LG phones behave this way.... LG did it intentionally, based on the possiblity that the phone could be very near your ear when opened.

actually, when open, it's ringing at the same volume i believe, it's just that when the phone is open, the sound will be a bit muffled since the speaker is located on the outside flap of the phone and therefore is being muffled by whatever object your phone is laying against..

for example, if your phone is open and sitting on your desk, the speaker is pointing towards your desk therefore the sound isn't as free to travel as it would be if the flap was closed.
