The lithium polymer batteries use a solid electrolyte which makes it possible to create a thinner and lighter battery (used a lot in RC planes) as compared to lithium ion. I've seen articles that claim lithium polymer have shorter life cycle which scares me a bit considering my experience with some lithium ion batteries, but hey, I guess we'll see.
