How does the phone perform with respect to internal, earpiece volume... not external speaker?

I have been surfing Motorola threads for months and this seems to be a recurring weakness in Moto phones. I would add my experience w/Moto phones supports the notion that earpiece volume sucks. One exception.... V3 which I've had over a week and can say is great.

I am really tempted to buy the 220 but...

Here's the question for the technical folks here... is sound volume in the earpiece software or hardware driven? In other words, is it possible that a Cingular released version would feature updated software which may drive better performance of things like volume? If it's hardware then I would assume we are all screwed. 🙄

This is the Cingular version it is just being marketed through Best Buy for Cingular. It is a Cingular branded final release.

I think the volume problem is hardware. I have to get one of the two holes created for the speaker aimed just right toward the opening in my ear to hear my caller.

The volume, coupled with the camera that is very sub-standard compared to my V600, are the deciding factors in returning the phone to Best Buy® tomorrow.

I will give Motorola® one more chance with the V3 ... I hope they do not let me down. 😕

Im doing exactly the same. The on paper specs are great for Motorola and suck us all in but it never translates into a great phone in actuality. V# is the last chance for me and Motorola
