Explaining the Firmware Updates...
Firmware dictates how an electronic device will behave, and what options / features / choices the user will see.
For instance - the fact that you currently have 5 ringer profiles available: "Loud, Soft, Vibrate, Vib+Ring, Silent" is dictated by the phone's firmware. Granted - YOU - the user can choose which profile you like at the moment... the firmware controls what choices you have available to you.
It controls everything from what buttons will do, what features are available, what will be displayed on the phone, when the backlight comes on - EVERYTHING.
So - to the degree that Motorola ever wants to change any behavior of the phone after it's been released - they will need to update...

I am in favor of all of kgrey's suggested firmware changes. Especially the one regarding showing the time during a call! I don't wear a watch, I use my phone as a time piece. I used a startac for years and got quite used to looking at it during a call to tell the time. I returned a v600 and canceled my plan with AT+T over this along with some other issues! It is so frustrating to have two clocks when not on a call and losing them both while talking. The outside clock is sacrificed for the Verizon logo to light up the night and let everyone know who's service one is using! The inside clock disappears for who knows why! But hay ......... you can still read the date! That is an important piece of information I always need on a ...

after you pleg in your phone you have to go to your hardware manager to find out what com port it is on
