Phone activation

verizonblue

Aug 26, 2004, 9:22 PM
If I purchase a v710 on ebay or from a private party, what are my options for getting my current verizon number transferred to the new phone? Are there any charges for activating the phone?
Also, if there is a software upgrade over the next month, is it still available to those phone owners that did not purchase the phone from verizon?
Thanks

i think they charge like $20 to change the esn#. don't know about the other. 😁 i would think you will be eligable for the upgrade.

Catstide, if the phone is a v710, isn't it already a Verizon phone at this point? That is, it isn't being sold to any other provider, yet. So, why would the esn# need to be changed? Assuming Verizonblue is already a Verizon customer, he could just go to his account and enter the esn# to activate it with his phone number, and it's done. Am I right? 🙂

Likewise, I agree, he should be eligible for any upgrades as long as the phone is activated.

Ok, but do we assume that a phone from Ebay may not be from VZW and are just changing the ESN# as a precaution (VZW could check the ESN#, no?). I thought the point of activation was to assign the ESN# to your account.

Just trying to understand...

Thank you!

your right, but the esn number would have to be changed to your account. i didn't know you could do this yourself. but my store has a sign up that has some service charges, and esn change is $20. 😳

You're right. You can call verizon and they will activate the new phone that you got from ebay. They need the esn number from your new phone to do it. You can even do this process online at verizonwireless.com for free. Some of the phones, can't be activated online though and you have to call in. If you go to the store it is very possible that they will charge you...so don't. I have done this before, and it works like a charm as long as you deal with someone reputable on ebay, and they don't sell you a stolen phone or something. I have never had a problem....Also, you are covered through verizon for a 1 year warranty, just like you bought it from them and .... are eligible for any upgrade. It is there phone if it is a verizon wireless brand....

I purchased my Samsung i600 on ebay and it's simple to activate this phone yourself. Just go to www.verizonwireless.com, log in to your account online (set this up if you haven't already), and towards the bottom right-hand corner of the page, click on the "Activate phone" link. Your phone should be up and running in a few minutes.

I don't recall, but I don't believe I was charged an activation fee for doing it myself.

PS

You should be able to get software updates without any problem. I was able to update my i600 with the Windows Mobile 2003 update when Verizon released it.

Thanks for the responses. I am a verizon customer and was worried that there would be additional charges for activation, upgrades, etc. because I didn't purchase the phone at Verizon.
