WAP Browser USage question

redhawk

Aug 17, 2004, 2:32 PM
I searched through countless threads trying to find the answer to this question, but couldn't. So I'm guessing I'm the only novice to this feature.

I'm trying to use the WAP browser. I never used it before on my old phone. Is there a way to manually insert an address? For instance, if my homepage is yahoo, and I want to check out espn. Can I simply go to a menu option and type in espn.com? I can't seem to find this capability.

I'm using the free WAP service through Yahoo!. Does that matter? Will other WAP services provide additional menu options? Thanks for your help.

yes, try these settings..

Name: VZW Copy
Homepage: http://wap.gelon.net
Gateway IP 1: 216.099.207.233
Service Type 1: WAP
Port 1: 8080

Everything else should be left blank or default.

Then on the homepage there is an option to go to sites and such..

Even thought it's being sent to my e-mail address at MSN and not my number?

I'm going to call Verizon to make sure.

I called Verizon to make sure and they said that writing an e-mail from your MSN, Hotmail, or AOL e-mail address from your phone does not get charged as a text message.

I'm one happy ***in' camper 😁

why would it? you're just using airtime minutes when you're on wap..it'd use the same minutes as if you were looking up sports scores or weather..it doesn't go through the same service as text messages do

The problem you guys using free wap is the phone uses the national access connection to connect....since your not paying for that connection you start getting charged for data minutes on your bill...I have talked to customers who where do this very thing where they had the feature on the account but it was a no charge (which is only for pix message)...and out of the blue on there bill they had charges for like $300 of data calls, grant they also where using there phone as a modem for there laptop but the connection is the same...That is what i would be paranoid about....Ill check to see if the phone has the option to change connection speeds so you MIGHT can change over the the QNC connection which uses airtime minutes...Let me find out whic...

its the actual name of the connection that the phone uses to send and receive pix messages...it also uses it for connection to WAP.

so why would it use a national connection? i don't understand why they would charge for data calls, would it work like 'get it now' surfing

yes but there is no feature to add onto your account for GIN surfing, there is an option $5/mth for Mobile web though...

OK, my paranoid ass called Verizon to ask all these questions.

Verizon has Mobile Web 2.0 for $4.99 a month.

We are using WAP without paying $4.99 a month because we are not using Verizon's WAP gateway.
So basically, Verizon charges $4.99 a month to use their gateway.

Clear? OK.

Now, when were browsing with our "free" WAP we are using our minutes, as if it were a regular phone call, therefore, if we have Unlimited Nights $ Weekends and use it during Nights and weekends then we won't have to worry about anything, such as going over your minutes and what not.

Clear? OK.

If someone gets overcharged it's not because they're using free WAP and somehow Verizon found a way to charge them, it's because they used their free WAP ...

Now they question is...

What are data call and how are those charged?

voxel5000

Aug 17, 2004, 5:41 PM
if you look at your bill you can see the different kind of calls..a data call is when you use the wap, get it now, use phone as modem, etc..anything other than talking on it pretty much..the free server we 'dial into' might be somewhere where verizon doesn't have service and when we call into it we might be getting charged a ton

Ya know...I was thinking.

People have been using free WAP since the LG VX6000 days...if Verizon would have been charging it as data calls or whatever I'm sure people wouldn't have continued using it...People have free WAP on the LGVX600, LGVX7000, Motorola T720/30 and now on out Motorola V710. I'm sure it's how I explained before...

That's great, I'll check back tomorrow to see what he says.

Yeah, it is awesome, I only use it during nights and weekends so it's fine and bieng able to check my MSN e-mail and send e-mails. Great time killer.

There are tons of great WAP sites which you can find in WAP directories if you do a search. There are even WAP games and stuff.
