Quick Tutorial on Making A Ringtone for the V710

It's really simple, and I'm getting 192k mp3 tunes to be ringtones, so I'm not sure why people are having so many problems, BUT...

This is what you need:
an mp3 of the song or sound effect you want to be the ringtone;
a basic audio editor (I'm using mp3 DirectCut -- freeware: http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch)
TransFlash card
Some Creativity

---------------

What I've been doing is this:
I made a "Ringtones" folder in my mp-3 directory, which is otherwise dominated by iTunes; I then COPY an mp3 (eg Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple) into the Ringtones directory;
Fire up mp3 directcut and open said mp3, eg SOTW;
The track appears as a wave (ie peaks/valleys); I select the portion I want to retain/keep as my ringtone;
Selec...

Are there any audio editors like this for the Mac? DirectCut is Windows-only.

Also, do you have to convert it to .mid or can you leave it as .mp3? I've read conflicting reports when I do a search here.

I've got an mp3 on my phone via transflash but when I switch to the transflash on the phone in the Sounds menu there isn't an option for 'Use as Ringtone' when I switch back to the phone memory itself in that same directory are the two default mp3's and I can set those as ringtones. What gives?

Contrary to what I had previously reported -- you can use either mp3's or mid's as ringtones. I was corrected on this about a week ago -- tested it -- and know now that it's true!

When in the transflash memory you have to select the file and then 'move' it to the phone memory before you can then use it as a ringtone. Then go back to the phone memory, and it will be available for you to use.

Okay I'll try that and see how it goes.

Okay, so I transferred it over to my phone from the memory and it won't play. Any idea why that would be?

And another question, if you have to move the song from the TF to the phone, is the only point of the TF as a means to transfer? Meaning, since I can't store the ringtone on the TF for playing, it isn't like I'm really adding any memory to the phone.

Also, if this means anything, I got the phone a week after it first came out and I've never updated it or anything. So if that would have something to do with my problems, there it is.

For some reason the way I cut the mp3 and inserted a fade in effect it wouldn't play on my phone, but when I removed the fade I got it to work.

So thanks for the help all!

Hey, Jim... that means we are limited to the phone's 10 megs for ringtone storage no matter what, huh? That's no problem for me, but if you download a bunch of applications, they have to reside in the same 10 megs I think. Could get crowded.

Itunes on the mac under osx can cut your mp3 down to whatever you want. Just load the song from it's original, go into the song's info, and choose a start and stop point. Once you play only that piece of the song, then convert it to mp3. You may want to limit the size of the file by changing the itune pref to say, 96K size. I understand that moving the file to the transflash card requires use of something called icleanup to remove hidden files put on the transflash by itunes.

Oooh, there's a useful tidbit of info for you apple-users... Is there no way with apple gear to just clear the 'hidden' attribute and delete the files?

That's the way that I understand it to be. It seems pretty dumb to have done it that way -- but apparently that's what we've got.

Seems that it would also be nice to be able to back up your directory from the phone to the trans-flash. But of course that's missing too.

Yeah -- one-file-at-a-time is pretty slow. Well at least you can just point the camera at the tf card so none of your pictures wind up in phone memory.

I was thinking even beyond that Dave. I was talking about the 'phone directory' as opposed to the file directory.

I guess I'm going to have to break down and get MPT and flash the phone to get the functionality that I thought that Verizon was eventually going to cough up.

You'd think that these bone heads would pony up and impliment this stuff correctly, if for no other reason than to protect the integrity of their network. It can't be good to have all of us flashing our phones with hacked firmware to get the needed functionality! However -- what do they expect us to do if they're not going to finalize the product. It's not as if we haven't all waited as they suggested that we do.

Ah, so... of course the phone directory. I still haven't gotten all the numbers off my old phone, even though they're sitting here on my pc. No way to get them to the phone.

I did buy MPT, but have not installed it yet as I suspect I'll have to un-install Verizon's software to use it, and then I'll be without internet. Maybe Saturday I'll just bite the bullet. But from what you say, I gather it's still ...

Sounds like we're in exactly the same place. I'm just about to pop for MPT, and then I'll flash with the 'Super Dave' version.

I'm not sure that I'm up for it either -- but having all this phone power, and such poor connectivity is getting very frustrating.

My plan is to go ahead with the flash and if it trashes the phone -- I'm just going to buy my way out of Verizon, junk the phone, and find another supplier. These guys are just too arrogant and self-serving for my taste.

It's really a shame because this phone has real potential.

Wow... well, keep us posted. If I hear a good report from you, maybe I'll try the flash.

BTW--I got the SKN6311B cable, MPT v3, plus an OEM leather case for $30 on ebay. Not sure what that stuff goes for from Motorola, but it sounded like a good deal to me.

Awesome!

I followed your instructions to the letter (except I used Roxio's sound editor) and I had no problem.

Thanks for the info.

I may have made the mistake of purchasing this phone on 2/28/05 thru Verizon. It has the latest firmware, and software updates.

Will this phone allow MP3s to be ringtones via TransFlash?

Can the phone still be used as an MP3 player?

What about transferring pictures for wallpaper?

Can you backup your phonebook via transflash?

Thanks

Latest firmware:

1. Mp3's as ringers via TF, only if you're willing and able to do a seem edit, although 1 other user has reported that he CAN do this without the edit.

2. MP3 player via TF - Yes

3. Pix for wallpaper will run directly from TF without transferring, but they can also be moved.

4. Can NOT back up phonebook to TF memory. Use Motorola Phonetools or other means to do this.

My s/w is 8700_01.40.0R.

Is this the version that needs the seem edit for MP3 ringtone transfer?

I am still within my 15 days, but will not have the TransFlash 256mb, and Motorola Bluetooth HS850 for testing until that time expires. Purchased 2/28/05 from Verizon Store. Purchased with Extended Battery and Accessory Pack. They matched Amazons free phone after rebate price, but charged me for the Extended Battery and Accessory Pack - $77.15.

What problems will I run into with this setup?

Is there a list that details all the Motorola problems, and Verizon mandated limitations of this phone? (ie Motorola - Camera quality, Verizon - Bluetooth)

This is the version!

There probably is a list that details all of the issues -- but I don't have it at my fingertips. I'll see if I can find a link for you tomorrow.

It's not a 'great' camera -- but it's passable. I hate the fact that VZ is playing their games -- but I can live with where I'm at now -- since, with the help of others, I've hacked my way to an acceptable operating compromise.

This phone does however have the best reception of any phone that I've ever owned. For this reason alone I would recommend the phone -- the service supplier is another matter.

I'm still debating what to do after my contract is up with VZ. Where you put your dollars is the way you cast your vote for your service supplier. Right now it looks lik...
