Digital and Analog?
Guys, would you, please, be so kind to explain to me what the difference between Digital and Analog phones is. I keep seeing these two terms in different forums and have no idea what they mean. I want to make a right choice in my next phone upgrade. Please! And thank you so much in advance! 😉 😎

Anyone correct me if im wrong, but i believe the difference of the 2 is that the digital is verizons main network, where u get your quality calls. Analog is a less advanced an older version of cell tower that verizon uses for roaming purposes. (hence their great coverage) So when u get charged for roaming, its cause u made or received a call when in analog mode. As oppossed to GSM networks like T-Mobile and Cingular which i think are just digital.

Thank you so much, buddy! Now I think I know a bit more about cell phones. Your reply was very helpful and useful. 😉

Take a look at the phonescoop.com Glossary. It has some very clear definitions of analog and digital technologies

You're partially right and partially wrong.
Digital is the "newer network"
Analog is the "older network"
Digital calls are clearer, consume less battery life, and have higher data rates.
Analog is NOT roaming...the calls are simply more staticy and consume ALOT more battery life.
The bottom line is that some towers are STILL analog...if you live in a very rural area where the coverage is limited...get a TRIMODE PHONE so it can pick up both digital and ANALOG!
PS Roaming is when you use other carriers' towers to place calls....For example. Using Sprint's tower through Verizon

Oh ok. I just said the analog roaming thing cause thats what the guy at radioshack told me. He said that whenever your phone switched from a "D" digital to an "A" analog, it was roaming and that it could charge you for it.

Think you're better off reading http://www.sfbacell.com for more info on digital versus analog. Analog is like how a landline phone is where one call takes a entire cell channel so it's less efficient for the carrier but it will work better to the user but the battery will drain faster. Digital is to save carriers money since more than one person can use a cell channel at the same time. That's one reason people with TDMA and CDMA phones tries to switch to Analog when they can to get the best sound quality.
