Ear Piece Volume
my v400 is impossible to hear from on the max volume (7). I have to push it to my ear really hard to hear the other person. The phone is only 2 months old.. do any of u have that problem? or is mine just defected.

A lot of people have been complaining about this including myself. One thing somebody else mentioned (and it's actually true) is that the ear piece sits a little bit higher on the v400. So, if you were to place the phone comfortably on your ear, most probably the part where the sound comes out of will be at the top of your ear instead of the middle.
I know this may sound like a stupid solution (but trust me...it's not meant to be), try sliding the phone down just a little bit. so that the top of flip sits in the middle of your ear. When I can't hear the other person I usually do this and it helps a lot.

Ear piece volume on the V400 has been the biggest problem for me, too. I have now had 3 different V400s with the following results:
First V400-Very low earpiece volume, MotoMixer did not work. Sent to Moto repair center in Texas, they sent it back with the repair ticket saying, "Problem Found-Low RX volume", "Action Taken-Reprogrammed", "Tested-OK". Yeah, the MotoMixer now worked, but the "reprogramming" did nothing for the volume!! Then, suddenly, the End/Power key would stop responding, causing me to have to REMOVE THE BATTERY to correct the situation. So I took this unit back to Cingular. They gave me a replacement (Second V400) that had the same issues as the new phone! So I opened it. I found that the earpice speaker is place...

OK, I'm not sure how comfortable you are with using PST, but, some members of this other message board I belong to found out how to adjust all the volumes above and beyond what the stock phone will allow you. It requires hex editing the gain_table.bin file, but if you read through the following link (there are a lot of pages) you'll find exactly what you're looking for where people posted their gain_table.bin for you to download. Then, all you would need to do is load it onto your phone.
Everybody says this works PERFECT and completely fixes the volume problem. I'm going to try it w/ my V400 once I have a free moment. Good luck!

I've been suffering from the volume issue myself; my workplace is pretty loud and the earpiece volume is way too low for noisy environments.
I'm going to try the fix on my V400 with V600 flexware; I'll post the results tomorrow.

Just used the hack they posted about to change the earpiece volume... and lo and behold, it works great!
I actually expected the change from 1 to 8 to be a lot louder than it ended up being, but even so it seems quite sufficient. I upped the volume from 1 to 6 myself which seems to be the sweet spot for me. No more holding the phone right into my ear and still being unable to hear the other person. Of course the real test comes tomorrow at work when I make sure it's loud enough for that. I have no doubt it will be though.
Just a tip: if you up it all the way to 8 (the max) then you'll hear your own voice back through the earpiece pretty loudly as you speak. Annoying to me.
Not something I'd suggest everyone do, but if you're comfort...

Just got back from work.
Oh yeah. When I tested it out I could hear perfectly well in my rather loud work environment. The difference was, quite plainly, like night and day. Before, if the other person talked in a normal tone it was like the faintest whisper on my phone compared to the noise around me at work and I could only understand about half of waht was said. It was nearly unusable there. And that's with the earpiece jammed as tightly to my ear as possible.
Now, with the earpiece volume hacked to 6 I can hold my phone normally and hear the other person very clearly. I feel about 5-6 is where they should have it set by default, rather than 1. Probably 5 would be best. I like mine a little louder though. At 6 you can hear your own vo...

To flex your phone, use Motorola PST which you can get from here: http://www.motclub.com/html/programs.htm
And, be sure to back up any files or data from your phone before flexing it as the flex completely wipes out your ringtones, pictures, java, etc. Of course the new flex comes with a lot better ringtones from Motorola than your V400 probably came with.
