I have not tried the Cingular data connect, mostly because they make it impossible to VPN. I think they may block certain ports, at least VPN wouldn't work on my previous V66 and customer "service" told me VPN is not supported by Cingular.

I use V400 as an analog dial-up modem, works just fine in that role on my Cingular account.

Maybe you can help me. I have the v 400, and will soon get a cable and software. What software do you reccommend? Also, I want to use my phone just as a modem and not get into paying for downloaded packets by kb, and just dial into my ISP. That will work, right?

thanks for any help

I was told by cingular, if you want to use your cell phone as a modem, you will still need to pay for downloaded packets by the KB. You can buy packages that will give you a certain amount of MB per month, but for unlimited it was something like $75/month! So, I gave up on that idea and I just use the data cable for uploading ringtones and wallpapers to my phone. Once you get the data cable you can download Motorola Phone Tools for free and this will allow you do do everything you need! Check out my website if you have any questions.

This is not correct if you use the phone just as a dumb analog modem to dial-up to a regular ISP access number. It is correct if you want to use the faster GPRS or some other similar digital data service (which is completely controlled by Cingular).

First you must get a data cable and the BVRP mobile phone tools (from BVRP, Motorola, Cingular or from a warez site). I originally tried using my old V66 cable but couldn't get BVRP to recognize the V400 properly. After getting a "1 cent" cable from eBay things have been smooth.

I dial up directly to my ISP using ...

Hey Japi,
Thank you very much for correcting me on this! I've been wanting to do this but when Cingular told me this I never even bothered to try. I would love to just be able to sign on to check my AOL email or grab map directions from mapquest.com when using my v400 with my laptop!
I'll have to try it this week!
Thanks again!
