sound in only one ear?

I got the attachment that Cingular sells to convert from the funny jack on the bottom of the phone to a 3/32" (=2.5mm) jack, and then a stereo 3/32" to stereo 1/8" (=3.5mm) converter at RadioShack, and then tried plugging in two different pairs of headphones. But I only hear sound in one ear.
This is true whether I am playing an mp3 off the memory card or listening to the radio. I am using regular headphones, the kind you can plug into your computer or receiver (Grado or Shure), and tried three different pairs. Other information on phonescoop, including in the forums, is quite clear that the phone supports stereo. So how do I get it, too?

Not sure but I believe the only way to get sound to headphones is to actually use headphones with the pop port built in. otherwise you only get sound out of one ear.
