You dont need a converter, unless you need to shorten it. The v710 will play 236 kb .mid, I have gotten my 9900 to play about 180 kb by disguising it as a .mid file. Also note; Using AOL will not allow the song to go through, but I know someone who it worked for by using yahoo.
Hope this helps, I posted it a long time ago for the v710 (by the way I like the 9900 much better)

I dont know if you all know about this 30 sec mp3 free music clip trick or not, but here it is. I can not take credit for this, I actually found it on another forum and think its worth spreading.

When you change the extension from mp3 to mid, make sure that the file extension actually says ".mid" and not ".mp3.mid". When I was doing the same process, I had this problem and could not get my tones into my phone.

It could be a few things, first what are you using to send you're e-mail. (aol, yahoo, gmail)
Second what is the music file size? The 9900 wont take full 30 sec clips which are equal to about 236kb.

Why don't you try going to a free ringtone site and just saving a ringtone file that is already in the .mid format and send it to your phone and see if that works?

That will help in eliminating some steps and see if you are doing others correctly. If that doesn't work, you are certainly doing something wrong but at least you have eliminated a few steps to check!

You can also download more than one file at a time if you find some you like and want to use. It saves money! 😁

You may hate the polyphonic tones, but do you realize how obnoxious the songs can be as a cell phone ringer in a business environment? 👿

I have heard teenager's cell phones go off in doctors offices, businesses and even the theater playing hard rock, rap and you name it! 😈 Very annoying! 😕

They are ok if you want to listen to MP3 songs with headphone but the rest of us really don't. 😕

.mid tones normally do not have voice and words. Most sites are pay sites except for a preview song, like Wall Mart, because they have to cover the cost of maintaining the site.

I would still recommend you try the free .mid tone previews and see if you can even install them as ringtones and if you are doing it right. My gues...

Ok heres one way to figure out if your doing it right but just have to much song-the 9900 wont play 236kb, it must be shorter.
How do you shorten it you ask....That I do not know so you need to test it another way. You need to get a shorter mp3 do the .mid conversion and then send it to your phone.
Use a free site like walmart.com, when searching for music type in sound effects. This should give you a list of sound effect CD's walmart sells. Just pick a cd and go nuts. A LOT of the sound effects are not full 30 second clips so if you do the conversion right than it will work. The other great thing on this phone is lets say you get a noise thats only 2 seconds, the 9900 will auto loop the noise if assigned as a ringer. (the v710 would...

For free 30 sec mp3 music:
-Go to Walmart.com,or towerrecords.com search under Music, do any kind of specific search like sound effects or broad search like rock.

Did towerrecords.com just change their mp3 format to .asx? I downloaded a song from there a few weeks ago without any problems, and now their songs have a .asx extension which the program does not support...any ideas, or ways to change it into something convertible?

To be honest no. I have ONLY USED THE WALMART.COM SITE. The walmart site has always had everything I was looking for, and after browsing through the towerecords site it actually seeemed to have a lot less. With this I never downloaded anything from towerrecords, although I have read posts from people that it does work. There is a very good chance they changed it due to the very topic we are discussing right now. My previous post with the detailed description on disguising the mp3 to a .mid DEFINETELY works for walmart. I have spent time with others who have had trouble also, but eventually figured out their error. It may take a few tries but it works.
Hope it helps

I was asking because I have used towerrecords.com music once before and sent it to my phone successfully, but now their music uses a .asx extension instead of .mp3...argghhh...I like walmart music and all but I can't find some region specific music like I can on towerrecords.com. Oh well...it's all good. Thanks for the help nine178.
