Up in the Air about the 9900 - Need help

I got the phone about a week ago and I am not totally knocked out by it. It was a big upgrade for me, my last phone was a Motorola Timeport 270c.

One of the main reasons I got this phone was for the speakerphone. Maybe its my phone,
but When I tried out the speakerphone
in my car and at home and it was
terrible. No one could hear me in
the car and it sounded stuffy when at home.

It also seems to drop calls a lot. I live in Central NY and never really had this problem with my last phone.

I am looking for some guidance or suggestions about this. I have two options: 1) Return it and wait for another Clamshell with a speaker phone to come out. Or 2) Go with the Motorola V710. (However I read a lot of the user reviews and it sc...

I've had the 9900 since it first came out, and I absolutely love it! I bought it because of the rave reviews on Phonescoop. I live just west of Boston and have had absolutely no problem with dropped calls. I'm not a fan of speaker phones, but I tried mine last night from my house, and the person on the other end said it sounded great, but I wasn't in a car or a noisy place...maybe that would make a difference....I had the phone right near me. For me this is a great phone for a great price. I wanted a phone that had good sound quality on both ends, and this fits the bill.

Really? I dropped numerous calls traveling
from Albany down to Westchester and that was driving on the Thruway. My old phone never
seemed to drop calls along that path?
I don't know, maybe I have a setting wrong,...
The new phone even drops calls in my house.
Any suggestions?

Last night I called from my house, about 20 miles west of Boston, to Phoenix and spoke for 2 hours, and the phone was fine the whole time. My friend even commented on how good it sounded, and it sounded great on my end too. I have relatives in Montana who have the same phone, and they seem to like it too.

Want to switch phones? I tired mine in the car again and it was terrible at best. I think I am going to take it to Verizon on friday and have them look at it.
Do you have any suggestions for an alternative phone?

I would definitely have Verizon check your phone out. If there's still a problem and they can't get you another 9900 and you're not happy with the one you have, check out the
LG VX-6100, which is also a tri-mode phone with a lot of good features, although from what I've been reading, it has some kind of volume bug.

From what you've written it doesnt seem you're too happy with the 9900. I think the vx 6100 wopuld be a good choice for you. The speakerphone is very loud and clear and has some cool features in a small package, plus its tri-mode. For reception I would have to say the v710. I had the v710 for about 3 months and was able to get service EVERYWHERE. But like you said in a earlier post it is not worth all the money for a phone that could have so many problems. Ive had the 9900 now for about a month and I absolutely love it. Its a solid overall b+ or A- phone. But again it may not be righyt for you. I think the v265 seems like a good phone, but with motorola putting out such crap recently I wouldnt trust it-still too new. The lg vx6100 ...

I ended up trading it back in and got my old old phone reinstated. 😢

I am now back to a Motorola 270c awaiting some
1st and 2nd quaters phones to come out.

The Audiovox seemed like a great phone, and I am pretty sure it is,...It just didn't seem to work right in my area.

Thanks for all the info and tips. I seriously appreciate them all.

Yeah my advise also. I live in NYC, but then again there are cell towers all over the place here. Im covered everywhere, basements, elevators, various subway stops, tunnels, and sometimes indoor parking lots. Try to get your phone inspected and get a new one.

I have 3 of these phones on my family plan, and since Oct 2, I don't think I have dropped more than 3 calls. Much better than any other phone I have used. I have used the speakerphone, clipped on the visor while driving my Diesel Pickup (Very Loud), and worked find. Even able to use Voice Dialing in that situation. I have had no problem with Sound Quality in any mode, uncluding Normal, Speakerphone and Headset.

I answered a thread on this forum a couple weeks ago where someone was having similar problems. They got a new phone and the problems went away.

Wow. I tried the speakerphone again this
evening while driving home. I turned off the radio, and could barely here it. I turned the
volume all the way up and when I held it close
to my face I could hear it, but it was wicked distorted. I guess I ought to see if I can get it looked at...Is there any alternative phone you might recommend? Like the LG 6100??

I recently used my 9900 speakerphone in my house with the phone laying in the den and me in another room some 20 or more feet away. All I did was speak with louder than normal voice and the party on the other end never missed a word. In fact they said they couldn't tell I had left the room. I could also hear them well. No hyperbole. It really works that well.

You know, it's strange because I was starting to drop calls earlier this week as well. Started off with 2 bars of signal strength (which is about all I usually get at home), and it dropped my call two times consecutively and a few times before that on other calls as well. I was pretty bummed out about this since I never had any problems from the beginning. So I did the *228 thing and that has seemed to help so far...

I hope you'll be able to get a new 9900 if your current one is faulty because this is a great phone. For other choices besides the lg6100, I'd take a look at the v265, heard great things about its reception.

I turned it back in and went back to my
Motorola Timeport 270c.

I couldn't get this one to work right...and I didn't want to be stuck with a phone that wasn't working right. Thanks for all the tips and helpful info. I will defiantely return to this site for info on my next phone.
