Why even after I have checked my voice mail does the red light continue to blink?

The light blinks for a number of reason. You can check the manual for full details but it blinks to missed calls, it also alerts you to voicemail messages, text messages, pages, pic messages, etc...
Check your "Messaging Menu" and your "Inbox" and I think you will find that you just have not cleared something! There is most likely a number after one of them indicating a message, not just a voice message, that has not been cleared.
