Free Web Access

I had my phone set up to use the free web access advised on Howard Forums, and it worked for a few weeks. Now, all of a sudden, I have an "HTTP Error: 403 Forbidden" message come up on the screen as soon as I press the web button. It doesn't even give the option to subscribe to VZW web service anymore. Any ideas what happened? Did VZW get wise on it? Is anybody else getting this message? Let me know.

Yes, I've been having the same problem since yesterday. But it could have come up earlier, since I don't connect to internet on my phone often.

Yep...I'm in the same boat I guess. I think the error message started showing sometime last week. I've looked at HOFO and here, but haven't found a way around it. I really don't think web access is worth 4.99 a month, it should come with the amount paid for monthly minutes...*sigh* guess that too is just wishful thinking on my part.

It was nice while it lasted though...was very handy when it came to catching up on news. Oh well. Guess that's what an actual computer is for.

I liked it for the movie listings. Nice when your out and want to check movie times in the area. Going and buying a paper once in awhile is cheaper than $4.99/month.

A person on HOFO mentioned MobileWeb4U.com. I checked it out, and it's only $2.10/month for WAP 2.0, and only $1.25/month if you can deal with just having WAP 1.1. $2.10/month is probably worth it, especially if you want to look up a phone number for a restaurant or something. A couple calls to information will make up for the $2.10.

If the service does not come from Verizon it will not work anymore than the free WAP works. If the free WAP settings no longer work it is because Verizon is blocking them.

It does work - just got it this morning. They have their own WAP gateway. I'm not very technical, so I don't know a lot about it, but they gave me an IP address and Port number to use upon subscribing to the service. They only offer it on phones for VZW and Alltel though, and even then, I'm not sure if they offer it on every phone. Tech support is first rate though. I got two responses back from them within half an hour of each message sent.

You signed up for WAP 2.0? On the site they say they don't support Audiovox 9900 for WAP 2.0

Also, you put the IP address in where the homepage setting is on the phone? WHere did you have to put the port setting?

Now that I actually took the time to look -- I found that too! On VZW site they say getWEB WAP 2.0 is only available on the LG 7000 & 4500. I thought it might have something to do with the screen resolution.

I am half tempted to try the MobileWEB4U service for a month but I can't find them listed on the www.bbb.org site. I used their contact page to ask for an address for the company. Hope I hear back from them soon!

FYI too, if you do try out mobileweb4u, if you get WAP 2.0, the web page begins with wap4, whereas the WAP 1.1 page just begins with wap. That was hanging me up at first, but like I said earlier today, tech support was very prompt and more than helpful to figure out the problem.

The 9900 is a relatively new offering I think, because, you are right, it is not listed on the covered devices. However, WAP 2.0 does work on the 9900, and it is shown on the front page of the site. I do have photographs being shown on ESPN if you need any more evidence, and I would not be able to have that with WAP 1.1.

When I was explaining before about the IP address, I meant that I had to do the same thing as with the free WAP, by powering on the phone, and then pressing the left soft key 7## and typing in the 6 zeros. The IP address still goes where it normally goes. You do change the homepage, but it is to the WAP 2.0 page provided by mobileweb4u.

Hope that answers your questions.

🙂 Sounds very interesting! Hmm... now to figure whether I will use it enough to justify the cost. (Hubby isn't really interested in mobile web. lol)

Does the web still use up your minutes?

That's the one drawback, it does use up minutes, but that would be the same even if you got it through VZW. I only use mine at night when the minutes are free, or during the day when I'm looking up directions or a phone number or something when I'm away from a computer. Comes in very handy, or as far as WAP in general. Like I said, I just got the Mobileweb4u today, but I can't see my usage changing much.

The other option you have if you don't want to justify the WAP 2.0 cost, you can always give WAP 1.1 a shot. I think I mentioned that it is only $15/year vs. $25/year for WAP 2.0. I guess it's just personal preference. You could give 1.1 a try to see how much you do use the mobile web, and upgrade later on if you find yourself getti...

Did you use the freeWAP before mobileweb4u? I was wondering if the freeWAP was WAP 2.0 -- I noticed that the freewap thru vzw was quite slow and directions were almost worthless because of the small amount of text that could be viewed on the screen. I looked up directions to a friend's house that is about 6 miles away and I had about 20 pages to read! lol!

I sent a message to mobileweb4u and got a quick reply, but no street address or such. I have read a few postings on HOFO and they sound legit. I just don't like the automatic rebilling, but if they are legit then that issue is minor.

Yeah, I did use the free WAP, but it was not WAP 2.0, only the subscription service is WAP 2.0. I actually found both versions very slow through VZW. I think no matter where you get web access, you're going to find directions frustrating to look at because phone screens are so small, but the convenience factor in my opinion more than makes up for it.

As far as automatic rebilling, I look at it as the same as dial-up service for my home computer, I automatically get rebilled for that.

Their website looks legit to me, along with the fact that they use paypal for billing. I still haven't made up my mind though...I just hope that if I do decide to subscribe that VZW won't block it somehow.

Yeah, if VZW blocks them, then they will block anyone. It will be a true monopoly. I did use the free wap for movie times. I was hoping to have it for awhile longer to see if I had any real need for it. ☚ī¸

I just subscribed this morning, and it does work. Once you subscribe, they give you an IP address and Port number, and you enter it just like you entered the Google page when doing free WAP. I subscribed to their WAP 2.0 feature for $25/year, and it looks great! It's fast too, faster than VZW's subscription service. Tons of links off their main page too. Admittingly, their main page doesn't look as nice as VZW Today page, but it's nice, and like I said, has tons of links.

No need to be forgiven, I only know the difference because I've been reading about it lately. I'm no techie either. WAP 1.1 is basically text and icons only, very basic mobile web. You can still look up phone numbers, get directions, check e-mail, news and sports scores, etc., but it's not as "pretty" as WAP 2.0. WAP 2.0 is basically the closest thing to date of searching on a computer. For example, if you go to MSNBC or something like that on a computer, with the headline, there is also a picture. Well, WAP 2.0 is able to show both the headline and picture whereas WAP 1.1 would only be able to show the headline. It's basically more visual friendly than WAP 1.1. I like it though, and it only cost $10 more per year than WAP 1.1, so th...

Thanks for the info. I just might subscribe to their service, sounds like a reasonable deal compared to what VZW offers. Thanks again 🙂
