MP3 ringtones no workee for me.

so what I did is this:

clipped 5 seconds of a song I liked and saved as .wav

converted to MP3 using iTunes (mono, 16kbps and mono 64kbps)

the file sizes were 12k and 43k respectively

renamed the files to file.mid

the small file came through, put when I press play, no sound happens, although it takes the expected duration for the phone to act like it finished playing.

the large file got "dropped" as in the attachment wasn't sent to the phone. (actually, it was named file.MID, does capitalization matter?)

any tips before I waste another $.25

You need to "convert" the file to mid, not just rename it! Read some of the previous postings on the software to use and the procedures to follow. It's the format of the file that matters, not just the name extension!

You can also just go to some of the free ringtone sites that offer poly ringtones in mid format and just sent them to your phone. They work fine and it is VERY easy! 🙂

actually, I've read many posts (both here and howard forums) and they all say explicitely that you don't actually convert them to midi, you just lie to the system by changing the name extension.

apparently, the player software is smart enough to detect the actual contents of the file and "do the right thing"

this is actually a fairly common thing as that is how both the lg6000 and the cdm8910 both work this way also. (my buddy uses a clip from Elton John's "bitch" song for his wife.... 8-0 )

will midi work with vocals?

Midi will work for anything. Remember, you need to convert it to .mid, not .midi according to the instructions. 🙂

Have you tried to download some .mid files from the Internet to your phone? Try that and get use to the process then go on to more complicated ways. 😁

according to this, only very simple single instrument .wav files can be converted to midi.

jimpobox is wrong...

A) You CAN NOT have vocals in a MIDI file... NOT POSSIBLE... A midi (.MID) file is a set of instructions to play a "voice" (which is equal to an instrument, and that's why it is "polyphonic" meaning multiple voices) at a certain note, certain volume and a certain length... (google "MIDI" and get a full explanation)... jimpobox should read up on it also... go to

http://www.midi.com/questions/whatismidi.asp »

B) MP3 file structures are played by the sound chips on recent model cell phone but in many phones they have to be stored with a .mid file extension... In actuality this is probably a bug in the chip set (which on most phones sound management chip set comes from the same manufacturer)...

C) If you email me y...

jimspobox, forgive me if you know this. I'm not trying to be insulting, but I'm not sure why you are suggesting downloading POLY ringtones instead of MP3s.

MP3s are songs, with lyrics sung by the original artists. That is something you can't get in a any POLY. POLY's are just digitized notes. Sure, get get harmony's with multiple notes playing at the same time, but no lyrics.

Yes you you are right that songs are usually in mp3, but they can also be in other formats.

The Poly ringtones I mentioned mostly do not have vocals but some do, but most don't. I suggested using them so members can get use to downloading the files and applying them to the phone as ringtones. They are mostly in .mid and very small, usually about 10k, and sound and work fine. It sure helps the ego when you try to do it and it actually works! 🙂

Many of us that have the phone in the workplace, vocal songs can be annoying to co-workers or customers and obnoxious in the worst case. Ringtones are more acceptable in the workplace! 😉

Once an new owner is use the the procedure of doing it the "easy" way, they can work on the ...

I don't believe it is technically possible to have lyrics in a polyphonic ringtone.

Otherwise, I don't disagree with your opinons about appropriate use of ringtones of ease of installation, but if someone is trying to use MP3s and asking for help on the process, telling them to use POLYs doesn't help. It is obvious from the orignal post that the problem is not in the ability to get the ringtone to the phone. The problem is in getting the MP3 to play properly once it gets there.

I too had problems initially with getting no sound if I went too low on kbps, and files being dropped if I went too high.

If you seach you will find posts that identify the range of min and max kbps allowable for tunes.

You DO NOT have to "Convert" to .mid, just rename. Works just find.

It sounds like to followed the right process, just need to hit that "sweet spot" for file size.

i've tried mono-16kbps mono-32kbps and mono-64kbps

this is a 5 second clip which comes out at 12, 23 and 43 KB respectively.

could it be the iTunes encoding? I doubt it as I have played all 3 files (created in windows iTunes) on linux xmms.

what works for you?

If you send me your email address, I will send you one that I built that works. I don't remember the settings off the top of my head, but you can open it and see for yourself.

And if you know anyone into MaryKay Cosmetics, you can use it for their ringtone (Pink Cadillac).
