gumby

****FIRST*****
Go to "my computer", and find "Folder Options..." in the drop down menu. It's either under "View" or "Tools", depending on which version of Windows you have. Once you get in to Folder Options, click on the "view" tab. In "view", UNCHECK the box that says "Hide file extensions for known file types".

2. Go to www.walmart.com, click on the "music" tab, and search for the artist / song that you want. Click on the album title when you find what you want, and check out the songs listed.

3. Right-click on the song that you want to have on your phone. Choose "Save As..." and save it to somewhere you your computer where you can find it later. Don't worry about saving it as .mid yet. Just name it and save it as an mp3, wma...

I have found a significant increase in sound quality by ripping at 32 kbps as opposed to 24. This adds 25% to the size of the ringtone, so decide for yourself.

gumby, thanks for the tutorial. Normally I don't like messing with processes that require this kind of precision, but, since you spelled it all out.... I gave it a shot and it worked perfectly. Very useful info' you gave. Thanks again.

I followed the steps outlined by gumby, and made sure the file is renamed as "mid" and not "midi", but when the message gets to my phone, the phone shows "midi" extension for the file and tells me "unacceptable file format".

Any idea what is happening here?

Thanks.

Did you make sure to uncheck "hide file extensions for known file types" in My Computer? If not, look at the first step in the tutorial. It tells how to do that. If that's not the problem, I don't really know what to tell you. Are you getting a song off of walmart.com? If the file that you're changing to a midi is some weird format, that might be the problem.

I just tried the www.goldwave.com site and it says that I am not authorized to view this page. What does that mean and how can I get around it?

I would just add that users can also consider using dBpowerAMP Music Converter (dMC) for converting the clip to mono/24/24... It is freeware available at:

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ »

And... To clip any part of a song out of an mp3 you can use the trial version of "Power MP3 Cutter" from CoolSoft... the trial version is crippled, BUT what it does is only allows you to clip out up to 30 seconds of any MP3, which is just about perfect for a ringtone... get it for free here:

When you set it as an actual ringtone it will play completely...

[Menu] [7] [1] [2] ^Media Gallery^ ^Select^ [Play]

Or you can just go to you media libray and play the clip

[Menu] [6] [Tones] ^select^ [Play]

Yes, the message does only play 5 seconds, but if you set it as a ringer or alert, it plays the whole thing. Just set mine up yesterday, and it works great! I've got Special Ed from Crank Yankers saying "I've got mail, yeaaa" whenever I get a voicemail.

I am using the steps that are listed in this tutorial.

1. Download clip from walmart.com
2. Change the downloaded clip's extention from .mp3 to .mid
3. Send the clip as attachment to my phone # at @vzwpix.com
4. When it arrives at my phone I open the message and see "file type .midi not supported"
5. If I try to save it I get a "no song in current slide"

Call me stupid but if anyone could please walk me through the process again I would be a very happy camper.

I am using a Macintosh not a PC if that makes a difference.

i dont think it would make a difference if its a mac or pc but wat ever. make sure the songs name isnt too long, i tried sending a song to my phone last night, and i received it this morning. Try to find yourself an audio editor for mac and reduce the size of the mp3. I downloaded mine from www.goldwave.com but its for pc only. when i downloaded the song from walmart it was 235KB, after the conversion to a smaller file it was 82KB. So try that, find an audio editor and reduce the size of it.

I can't get the MP3/mids to work either. I get the error excess size - "filename.midi", but my filetypes are NOT in .midi. I don't think it's the filesize since one was 110 kb and the other 2 were 86-ish kb. Others have sent .mids bigger than that. I've tried playing the files in Windows Media Player and they play fine there as a .mid file. I can recieve regular, non-extension changed .mid files fine on my phone as well, I've already sent two of those to my phone via email. I've noticed that if you go on www.vzwpix.com and try to send yourself the extension-changed .mid file there, you won't be able to preview/listen to it, but if you use a regular .mid file you can hear it just fine. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I'm h...

I understand the process to put the mp3 on the phone via vzwpix. I want to put a file that originally is a midi file on the phone as a ringer. I assume I follow the same steps.

1.Are there any particular sound file specifications for the midi file to make it work correctly?

2. When the message is received on the phone will I be able to move it to the media gallery and have the file stored there under ringtones?

The reason that I ask is that I tried to move a voice note to use as a ringtone but I have been unable to get it into the tone folder - it stays in the voice note folder.

Thanks for the help. I have only had the phone for a few days and I am still deciding if I should keep it.

I was able to do that by sending it as the sound on a pixmsg to another phone, then send it back.

I didn't try to sending it to myself. That might work, but I bet you would get charged for 2 messages anyway (1 Send / 1 Receive).

I did try to create a message without sending it, but you can't save from that.

The key is to get it into a pix msg in your INBOX, then you can save it.

When the mp3 file is saved in the specified settings with goldwave, name chaged to XXX.mid, when it is sent to the phone is it going to play like a midi polyphonic file or will it sound like the mp3?

Is there any sound level that the file is best saved at?

I converted an mp3 from walmart.com to the specs in the original post. When I play this file on the computer still with the mp3 extention there is a high pitched squeal behind the music and the overall sound wavers. When I change the ext to .mid and play it on the computer the sound just pops. So - if the file is uploaded to the phone will there be a squeal and warbling? I would really like to get it right before I upload it to the phone 😕

Hi,

Is there anything else you would recommend other than Goldenwave. I tried to get on the site and it says that the directory listing is denied. Or am I doing something wrong.

i have fallowed all of the steps to the letter, but i am still unsure on why this wont work
1. when i try to convert it to make it smaller, i have to save it as a .wav file, it doesn't allow me to save it as an mp3 and then make it smaller
2. i have gotten it sent to my phone but when i try to play it, it starts it, and then stops it right away, playing nothing. Any idea why thats happening?
thanks for your help guys, hopefully i can figure this out
