Is battery life related to 'bad signal' or being in 'no service'?

Recently, I bought two LG VX 4500 for a family plan. Everything is fine but battery life. I tested two batteries. In my house, it goes almost 3 days with only a few calls under good reception but it lasts only less than 24 hours at work where the signal is only one or 'no service.' The results of Both batteries were the same! Does 'bad signal' or 'no service' affect battery life? One more, battery charge time takes only 2 hours although I discharged them completely. Is it normal or not? The book says it takes 3 hours though....

I have seen similar battery life behavior. It is a known fact that if you are in a poor signal area, more power has to be pumped out by the phone in order to keep a signal established therefore causing decreased battery life.

As far as charging, my charging time varies from 2-3 hours using the standard charger when battery is near dead.
