Is there anyway to download free ringtones for the lg 4500 or do they have to be purchased?

Yes. You do have to purchase the cable for your phone. It's about 20.00

Download bitpim.
You will be able to drag and drop sounds, and pictures to your phone. You can also back up your address book and more. It is free software.
I have not used the software yet.....So I can't verify that it works, but it looks like there will be no problems with it.
