what service provider do you have? If it's AT&T, then you already have aim through mMode. There's no software to add - just choose it from the mMode menu.
It's a pretty cumbersome way to chat, if you ask me, but it is nice to be able to put up an away message or have people respond to something urgent when you can't be near your pc.
