switching between my device and my storage memory

omnia20

Dec 21, 2008, 12:33 AM
I added an 8gb sdhc card to my omnia and successfully transferred saved pics to the card. The card shows up as my storage and storage card in file explorer (what's the difference?).

My problem is that the camera won't let me take pictures and says there isn't enough memory. How can I set the storage card as the default memory storage for the camera? The current file structure is- my device/ my docs/ DCIM/100sscam.

omnia20...please let me know where you purchased your 8gb sdhc card. Is the card a Class 2 or a Class 4 card?
I will appreciate your reply. Thanks!

I got a sandisk 8gb micro sdhc class 2 card from Staples. They are now on sale for $30.

I didn't see any stores selling 16gb cards and think that the device might run slower interfacing w/ the larger card, as happens w/ cameras.

What is the difference between class 2 & 4?

Thanks for sharing.
The difference between Class 2 and Class 4 is speed. Class 4 being twice as fast read/write than Class 2. Also, there is a Class 6.
I have found on-line, the 16GB Class 2 and 8GB Class 2 and Class 4.
I do not think I have a need for the 16GB and 8GB should work well for me.

Here's a question...when you used the Omnia to Format your 8GB, were there any "Folders" developed on the SDHC Card by the Format Process and if so, what were the names of those folders?

omnia20...I do not yet have a SD Card installed but I would think once a photo was taken, the Omnia would offer the user to "Save" the photo and offer a selection where to save; Internal or External. That seems like maybe the way it should work.

Without a card, my Omnia saves Internal of course.

omnia20...I find on Page 98 of the Omnia User Manual the following:

"Press the Camera button until the shutter sounds.
(The picture will automatically be saved into the DCIM folder of your internal microSD card.)"

I take that to mean that the DCIM Folder they refer to is located on the microSD card. What say you?

On Page 32 of the same Omnia User Manual, it says:
"Key Features of the Omnia"

"microSD┞¢ (up to 16GB) Expansion Memory"

Now, that is about all it says in the Omnia User Manual about the microSD Card and the storing of camera photos to that card.

I answered my own question.

I didn't notice when the camera is on that in the camera settings (bottom left icon- disc w/ wrench) that there is a second tab that allows you to choose between my device/ my storage and storage card.

This tab also triggers camera inactivity time out, guide line (shows a grid on screen) and review screen (shows captured sceen before shot).

I still don't understand the difference between my storage/ storage card.

I wish samsung wrote more details about the device to cut down on the learing curve. They did answer one question- confirming that you can't add or remove widgets.

Super!!! Great find!
Now, you can control the Camera's Photo Storage selection as wanted.
I agree with you, there could be more details provided by Samsung which would make for happy times!
But, another way of looking at life is "It's the fun of the chase that gives the greater thrills!"
I so glad you solved the problem. And I appreciate you sharing.
There are several "Hidden" functions with this Omnia and there will be more to come I am sure.
The other "Hidden" function recently found is the great way to close all open applications.

Omnia 20 ... the "My Storage" is your 8b that your Omnia came with. The Storage Card is the external micro sd card you put into the phone (by the battery). 😉

This is true, but there is more to it. 88.2 MB is carved out of "My Storage" and used as "Storage Memory" or "Device Storage". 88.2MB is not much, so where did Verizon put their preinstalled programs? That's right, on this tiny partition. If you go to Settings\System\Memory you will likely see more than half of your "Storage" used up. Some have reported almost all used up. As you add programs little bits of peripheral programming is going into this partition and eating it up. Opera's cache is set to go in here too. You've got to change that immediately. If you don't know how, I'll find a thread.

Also, I would appreciate knowing how to route Opera's Cache to a more suitable location; maybe the Storage Card.
Thanks for your assistance.

Open Opera and type in the address opera:config without any http stuff before it. This will open the opera configuration tool. Go to User Preferences down toward the bottom and open it. Then go to the cache storage line and add your desired location. To save it you have to go to the bottom and press save. Do a soft reset and you should be done. Enjoy.
