3G for both voice and data?

No one seems to have the answer on this... will the iPhone use AT&T's 3G network for both voice and data, or just data?

Here in Los Angeles, AT&T's voice network blows, and my friends who have iPhones complain of constantly dropped calls and lack of signal. But AT&T is touting almost full-market 3G coverage, so I'm wondering if that will help the voice coverage issues.

3G coverage is primarily for high speed data transfer. I have heard many people complain about coverage issues with iPhone it is not uncommon especially if you unlock it. If you are having reception issues it is more often than not the phone instead of the actual service. Los Angeles is a very well covered area so there should not be any issues with coverage. Try a full iPhone restore which may help your issue. AT&T uses three 3G frequencies which can be used for voice calling. Your phone will default to the best frequency for what your phone is trying to accomplish whether it be voice or data calling and may switch between frequencies if needed (usually without you noticing the change)

Yes. It uses WCDMA for voice and HSDPA and HSUPA for data. If there is no 3G available, the phone will revert to GSM and EDGE. A lot of people and sites constantly say that 3G is just faster data, but it is also a completely new voice system. You will no longer use the GSM system for voice, you will use WCDMA, which should be much better and more similar to Verizon and Sprint voice quality.
