Well, the iPhone uses information from cell towers around the area to pinpoint its location, so I imagine that it can be free, but for better detail you might have to pay.

Actually iphone uses wi-fi locations, cell towers & GPS to cordinate position. Google maps is built in & is very accurate & free. You can purchase other GPS systems, like NavTec through ATT for about $10/Mo. with more features if you like. 😎

Yep. I look at it this way...average GPS device is about $400. Cost on ATT Navigator is $10/mo. That's $240 spread out through 24 months. Not a bad deal at all. Plus, map updates, software updates, etc. all happen on their own OTA, which you can't get on a stand-alone GPS. All in all, it's well worth the 10 bucks a month.

Rule of thumb when dealing with cellular (devices and carriers alike)...if it looks reeeeaaally cool, it probably costs money. 😁

just got off the phone with an ATT customer service agent and she stated that the GPS is NOT included in the $30 monthly fee. She says that the GPS uses a map that can be purchased for an additional $9.99 a month. Now, either these ATT reps and CSAs need to get on the same page with their information or either they need not give information on what they THINK they know when they actually aren't knowing squat. #-o

Trust me, you get the same thing from all the carriers. I've worked for several, and in every case the left hand usually does not communicate much with the right. For the record, AT&T Navigator is $10 a month and worth every penny. As I posted earlier, that adds up to $240 spread throughout 2 years. You will typically pay much more than that (4 or 5 hundred on average) in one lump sum for a stand-alone unit. Plus you can take it with you when you get out of your car and it's a phone!! 🙂

everything is included in the data plan. The at&t telenav is a separate program for other phones for $10 a month, it's good yes. but iPhone will be using google maps with assisted gps(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS)which is awesome. Apple has the agreement that it does not have to implement at&t's programs or stores on the iPhone, that's what makes the iPhone so great, you get to choose what crap programs you want, for the most part that is. But it is included in the data plan. That's how they roll so everyone should know that IPHONE is an ASS KICKER. and the whole MMS video thing, just wait till apple does, it'll just work when they gets hands fully around it.

Doubtful, to date nothing on the iPhone is voice activated, but there could be with the 3rd party apps. No one really knows. But just to say NO we have to cavemen and type in the address to where we are going.

Called 3 AT&T stores in my area all three said that there is no fee for the GPS. IT does use Google Maps. One Apple retail store said the same, the AT&T stores acted like they were 99% but the Apple store said defiantly no charge.
